3,4,5, & 6 grove barrels

What's the advantage of having a 3 grove barrel vs any of the rest?

Thinking of a 6mm barrel. I have always used a 6 grove barrel. I talked to a person who has a Pac-Nor 3 grove 6mm and loves it.

The 3 groove barrel will clean-up a little easier, and usually offer a little more velocity. The downside is the 3 groove is hard on thin jacket bullets.

From my experience, odd groove bbl's seem to do well with VLD's better than with the even groove bbl's. not saying that is always the case, but for me at least, it has beem more previlent than not.

If you get a good barrel, you get a good barrel. The amount of lands and grooves mean nothing. One of the best barrels that I ever had was an 8 groove.

Odd #'s of lands/grooves is supposed to affect bullet balance less than even, the idea being the deformation caused by forcing the bullet to conform to the rifling likely will be more symmetrical (than that from an even number-rifled bore) which ought to affect flight path less.

I can't hold tight enough to really tell the difference though the 3-groove PacNor's I had fitted for my T2k were real hummers....

So the guys that are winning the matches shooting 4 and 6 grooves are defying something? I think the odd groove things shoot well, but do not win matches. Are we talking about the 3 legged stool concept?

FWIW - I still have a 2 groove barrel that is an excellent and accurate shooter. I have used a lot of Pac Nor 3 groove barrels on customer builds and in test firing they have, as a group, been very accurate.

For what its worth my gunsmith, Jon Beanland does not like 5 groove barrels. He says that the reamers he uses, PTG, do not center well in a 5 grove barrel when cutting the chamber. He likes 4 and 6 grove barrels. From what I see from my rifle and what others say about their Beanland rifles I would not challange him on this.
