2nd Doe for 2024, this one with hand cannon!

Took this doe at 150 yds with heart/lung shot with Savage Stryker in Cal 308. Shooting handloads of 125gr nosler BT and Varget powder.
Nice shot and some good eating there. I have a Striker in 308 also and it shoots really well. Killed a few groundhogs with it here in Pa. but it’s bad luck and I quit using it. I’ve taken it on hunts in 3 different states and never saw a deer/bear that I could shoot with it. I went back to taking a full size rifle along and my success has improved tremendously. Lol

This is the 4th deer with 4 shots I've taken with this Cannon! One was 200 yds. Not bad luck for me.

Got a .308 TC encore pistol. Shot some loads under an inch. Kinda like hunting with a short carbine. Doug
Our area is pistol/shotgun only for firearms. I switched to pistol many years ago because I was tired of carrying those heavy shotguns ,plus I have better range with the pistol.
They've been talking about rifle state wide the last few years. So far it hasn't worked, mainly because of the big 3 metro areas voting it down. This next year they're leaving it up to individual counties so we'll see. The farmers I've talked to are about a 50/50 split on this in our area.

A closer look at your Striker reveals no muzzle brake. Is this the factory barrel? Mine has a factory brake that you can open up by twisting a sleeve around the brake to open or close the holes. Mine may be newer/older than yours. I’ll have to do a little research. Thanks for the incentive.

@CJ6
NY used to be shotgun only in much of the Fingerlakes area. Coming from Western PA I never could wrap my head around that NY reasoning. Everyone up there would tell me how terrified they were of those bullets that could travel miles. Then I saw them hunting with semi auto (Rem 1100) slug guns in the puckerbrush. It looked like an armed clown car exhibit at the circus. Besides a 22, it is my opinion NOTHING bounces more readily that a slug. I decided to go HIGH and go pistol.
The good thing was the NY politicians were just as dumb then as now. They allowed handgun hunting, 35 caliber (thinking 38, 357) or larger. The idea was to limit "range". No one apparently heard of TC or XP 100! Thus the great popularity of the 357 Herrett and 35 Remington 14 inch barrels in NY.
I took 24 deer (or more) with the Contender and a 2x Leupold over the years. The longest shot was 167 yards. Several at over 100 and four at 97. Yes, from the same stand, to the same viburnum bush that they would stop behind in the pasture. My last deer, and largest buck ever, was shot at ....ahem....about muzzle blast singe the hair distance (ok, about 18 yards) with that same TC, in PA.
I loved handgun hunting because any deer I shot I considered a trophy, and because it was so portable. I slung mine and it was off to the races. A backpack and a bag of rice for a rest and I was all set. When on the ground I often shot laying on my back, knees up, with the sling wrapped around my legs holding the pistol to the side of my right leg. VERY stable and that's how I popped the 167 yard venison donor.
Well done Stosh! good shooting

I kinda feel the same as every deer is a trophy when taken with a pistol (regardless of sex or size) . It's the challenge of the shot that makes my day.
As for the 50/50 split on going to rifle almost all negative comments are about stock losses. About 10-12 years ago a farmer had 2 of his Llamas shot behind his barn, a few years after, a guy had his Shetland pony shot.... you get the idea .
On the positive side, those farmers just want the deer gone (turkies as well) because of crop damage.
Until things change I'll be happy to keep using an XP/XPR or Encore pistol.

Wanting our deer and turkeys gone is part of habitat loss around here, and greed. It wont be long till it looks like the moon. Doug

As far as I know it's stock barrel. Bought it used! I think it's a different model/year some have breaks, some don't. Wouldn't use a break cause it's loud enough LOL

CJ6, last couple years I thought a rifle straight wall cartridge exception would be added for the shotgun zone in Mn. As other ag area states have went to them. I have a brand new Knight kp1 45/70 waiting to be unboxed.

I also play with a couple, carbine and handgun length in JDJ's 375. Plus a 357 Herrett. I just call them all Hand Cannons, to save time.. SMILE. Along with the forementioned 257 JDJ.
Hey, guys, don't want to sound like a snob. JD Jones called his guns Hand Cannons only if they exceeded .30 cal.
I have a few of his real handcannons-.375/.284 XP-100, .325 WSM XP-100, .416 Taylor Encore
I love my "little" handguns-.22-250, .250 Sav. AI, .308 HS, 6.5/.284 XP.t 375 JDJ's and a 357 Herrett. I just call them all Hand Cannons, saves time. SMILE.
