29 gr, in .17 Remington

just curious about some loads for my 17, shot a lot of 25 in it, but this will br my first attempt at 29 grain, I've got a lot of different powder, Varget, IMR4320. WW748, just need somewhere to start. thanks Jim

The new Berger reloading book has lots of suggested loads for their 30 grain bullets. I think using the 30gr. info at starting loads would be a good start for your 29gr bullet. I shoot 25 and 30 grain bullets in my .17 Rem. Seems I only have to back down about .5 of a grain of powder with my 30gr. bullets.

Jim Butler--pacificman has made a good suggestion for you to use the 30 gr. Berger load data and start down around their suggested starting loads for that bullet. I'm using the 29 gr. FBHP VLD Genco bullets coated with hBN in my Predator action .17 Remington with a 1 in 9 twist Lilja barrel. I use IMR 8208 XBR powder and Remington 7½ primers. However, I'm using WW .204 Ruger casings formed down to .17 Remington so my load data wouldn't help you much. The case capacity is a bit less than a standard .17 Remington casing and I get 3,817 fps at the muzzle with only 21.4 gr. of IMR 8208 XBR.

Another powder I have had good luck with for 30 gr. bullets is N-540. WW-760 has proven to be fairly accurate with 30 gr. bullets in my old Shilen barreled .17 Remington, but the WW-760 was a bit temperature sensitive during hot summer sessions in prairie dog towns.

Original poster... hopefully your rifle is a 1-9 twist to use the 29's & 30's well. I've found H-380 and R-15 to be the best for my 17 rem. The ww760 also works pretty well. Definitely use the Rem 7 1/2 primer.

Also if you google up "Woodchuck Den".... that fellow sells some terrific 30gr BT bullets. WD

Finially got two days to put a load together, seemed to like 26 grains of H414 7 tho off the lands, shoots a ragged hole at 100 yds, took it coyote hunting 2 days later and 1 shot 1 kill at 308 yds, more as i do more tuning for speed. Jim
