.284 With Reloader 22

Old Navy

Gold $$ Contributor
I just installed a new .284 Win Match barrel and have some 180 Hybrids on the way. Can someone recommend a starting load with Reloader 22? This is the only powder I have a good supply of. Thanks. Old Navy in Utah.

You might want to try to locate a supply of slightly faster powder because Re-22 is too slow.

I have used:

Norma 204
Ramshot Hunter
Win. 760
Hodgdon 100V (cool burning, accurate)

4350 which is what most will recommend... (I don't)

Enjoy the process!

Sorry I don’t have a load for Reloader 22. My recommendation for powder would be H4350 or H4831SC. I have had 2 284 F Class rifles and both will shoot with or these powders. My first barrel was for the Berger 180 Hybrid and my second is for the Berger 184gr Hybrid. Good luck with load development.

RL16 and RL 23 have worked well for me with heavy bullets for several years. RL 22 would foul out the barrel before I could get 60 record shots down range.
I hope this helps,
Lloyd

I don't like RL-22 unless it's more temp stable than it used to be years ago.
With just a 20 degree Fahrenheit change in air temp the POI at 330 yards moved 6+ inches. Got decent speed, but H-4831 / 4831sc is my go to choice.

Edit:... I used 55 gr of RL-22 under 150 TTSX-BT. I got somewhere right above 2,900 fps in a 22" bbl in mid afternoon, but by evening time the speed dropped some 30+ fps... 2.860" COAL was a big jump to the lands but it liked it best. Magazine allowed up to 2.990".

A 284 should run less pressure thatna 65284 I ran 51.5 in my 65284... bigger bore less pressure, until it goes close to max

H4831sc is perfect and it's been in stock frequently at Powder Valley lately. I just checked and it's in stock right now...

I’ve used H4831SC and Reloader17 with 180 and 184gr bullets
Reloader 17 will give you more velocity with less pressure
Both work good in my 284

100V is an interesting choice. What was velocity like and what’s a good starting load with 180 class?

This is a difficult idea to answer simply.

There are several competition chambers which we all use and there are several (if not more...) chamber designs which will affect your reloading ideas. It's fine to ask the question but you won't know any of the specifics and how they apply to your chamber.

I have been shooting the Badlands 160 gr. SBD2 for 1,000 yards. But my chamber reamer was designed with this bullet in mind as it's 1.655" long. It gets seated out quite a bit. With my specifics I'm running about 2,800 fps using the 100V. Cool and easier on the barrels. This load is accurate in my rifle loaded for my chamber, but I'm not a top 10 F-Class shooter either.

Enjoy the process!

The Allianz online load data guide recommends RL 26 with 140 and heavier bullets, RL 19/15 with the 130. Since RL powders are among the most difficult to find, you may want to heed the advice of others and find something else.
