.284 Winchester

I would not think so I am pushing the 168 Berger out of a 280 at 2750 and that is a MAX load in my set up it all will depend on your set up

Dittos to Jerry's posting. With my 284 Win long range rifle 2800 - 2850 fps with a Berger 180 is a very workable number, and accurate too.

It was this article that got me thinking seriously about a .284 for long-range prone competition... Then I went and bought another .30 caliber barrel... Ah well, next time perhaps! :)

I'm looking hard at the .284 as a lesser hitting option to my 7WSM, but wondering about the barrel length needed to get a 180 grain Berger to 2,850+ fps and what powder to make it go. Quick load says that a 28"+ barrel and H1000, RL-22 or RL-25 will get me there and still be reasonable on pressure. Any insight is appreciated.

I think the answer to your questions depends on your rifle.

I have a shilen DGA 284 stainless with octagon barrel that will push a 150 grain to 3200 on a load thats supposed to do 2900. We were chrono'ing a Rem sendero 7 mag and the 284 at the same time and totally did not expect the numbers that were popping up. Then on the other end of the spectrum I have a 6x284 that pushes at 200 FPS slower than its supposed to, just depends on your barrel, chamber, brass etc.

The answer to more speed with the .470 bolt face is the .284 Shehane. I took the same case as used by many in the 1000 yd BR game, the 6.5-284 Shehane, and went with in the the 7mm configuration. It keeps the same .35 degree shoulder with less body taper, i.e., it is .485 at the shoulder, thus more capacity. Before I traveled this path, I gave a courtesy call to Bill Shehane, who gave me the OK.

With 4831SC and 175s or 180s, I can easily get 2950 with exceptional accuracy. I have gone a little past 3000 in testing with no problems.

Keep in mind that I do a lot of case and bullet prep, because I can do that better than I can shoot, but this chambering will get it done at 1000.

A chamber cut for 175 SMK and 180 JLKs will seat the 180 Bergers and 176 GTBs much deeper in the case so spec. you reamer accordingly.

In short, the 284 Shehane will do everything the 280 AI will do, in a shorter action, and that is a good thing.
