284 Winchester Whitetail loads.

44.5g Re-15 under 150g NBT
45.3g Re-15 under 140g NBT
Through my Savage 99

I've been trying Re-17 but I haven't dialed it in enough to trust yet.

I've used this load in my 16" XP-100 for years and the deer rarely go more than 25 yards depending on where they were hit. High in the shoulder and they fold up, double lung or heart shot and they can go 50 yards..
51.8 grains of H-4350 with Federal 210M primers and a 140 grain Ballistic Tip works very well in that pistol..

I have used IMR4350 for years behind the 145 gr. Speer Bt or Hot core FB, and also behind the 139 SST, F210M primers WW brass. I use it in a 22" A-bolt Medallion. My rifle takes more powder without pressure signs than the Hodgdon website, so work up. Some other powder work well also, Varget, H414, H4350, etc. But IMR4350 gives less pressure at good velocities. Working on RL17 loads, but not there yet. My load eguals the 150 gr. fusion 7mm Mag factory load velocity. Dave

Thanks Dave. Those are the bullet weights I will be working with first. Maybe down to 130gr as well. I have been hearing that the H4350 is turning in some good velocity as well, but I'm sitting on a good supply of IMR 4350 at the moment.

Shoot the IMR4350, I have had steller accuracy with it and the 145 Speer Bt and the 139 SST. Remember that IMR may be temp sensative so best work up in the heat. I have killed a truck load of whitetails and mule deer with the Speer 145 and the SSt and the shock is temindous with both. Only think with the 145 BT is that at close range, it has a tendency for the jacket to seperate from the core. hasn't mattered, they still drop. Like I said, work up the IMR4350, my loads are a little compressed but not much so that I don't have to much push on the bullet. With that loading, I get great velocity and accuracy. If I had a long action, I could get the bullet out a little further, but doesn't matter to the deer, just as dead! Its a great round and I have never had any feeding issues in the field. Oh, yeah, at least one very large cow elk to the 284 with the partition bullet, she was DRT in her tracks. It is always hard for me to decide which deer rifle to use, the 284, or the 25-06. Usually the 25-06 for Texas whitetails, and the 284 for bigger stuff!

I'm loading 57.5 grs of RL-17, CCI 200 primer, 120gr Barnes TSX bullet. Smoking, accurate load at 3300 fps out of a 23" Krieger barrel. Super accurate in a shortend, lightend "Burnt Out" Palma barrel. This is a top load as 58 grs only gained 15 fps. No pressure issues but start 1/2 to full grain less.

Sounde like a plan Dave. The reamer that my rifle smith has coming is a little longer in the throat. Being that my 284 is being built on a long M700 action,I won't have to invade my powder capacity with the longer bullets. I should be able to make good use of the available space in the 284 without magazine or throat issues. I've been a fan of IMR 4350 since I loaded my first 270 with it back in 80. It will definately get a work out in the new 284.

Larryh128; I've been hearing good things about RL17. I'm not surprised. I have been using RL19 in my 25/06 with the 85gr Ballistic Tips with great sucess. In fact,RL19 is one of my favorite mid capacity cartridge powders with light to medium weight bullets. I'm sure RL17 will find a home here in time. There are so many powders I haven't had time to explore yet. 4007,8208,RL17,RL25 to name a few. RL22 is another staple in my powder store. Just love it.

RL-17 is their new double base powder. Basically, you can start at your 4350 load & work up from there. You will gain 100-200 fps over 4350 with the same pressures. Instead of the pressure spiking, it's a slower curve. Very clean burning. I load it in the 284 & also a pair of 300 WSM's. Super, super powder. It's only been out a couple years but it's a winner. The light for caliber Barnes TSX really make it a deadly combo.

I have RL17, just haven't had time to work it up. Every who shoots it in the 284 raves about it. I was shooting it some in my 6XC. I would like to also try it in the 350 Rem Mag. to see how it does, Dave

What I was told " It's great for any short, fat round" . So it should good for a bunch of us as well. ;D I haven't seen any real time gains in longer rounds like a 270 etc. :'(

As soon as German Salazar and Bob Jensen reported that RL-17 was a different powder with a longer burning curve with higher velocites I tried it in my sporter 284.

I have had a 284 for over 20 yrs. Used win 760, then IMR 4350 and settled on H4350 as the best until RL-17 showed.

The current barrel is 23" long, all bullets mentioned below are moly coated. The box mag has been lengthened to approx 3.1".

I have a proven load that works from 90 degrees down to 50 for general use here in S. Az. it is not maxed out:
150 nos bt @ 3100 with 57 gr of RL-17 OAL 3.065"

The hunting load for cooler temps is close to max:
160 accubond @ 3070 with 57 gr of RL-17 OAL 3.080"

Looked in my notes and there were a few more but no OAL data.

140 TSX .050" off lands 59 gr RL-17 3225 fps

150 E-tip 56.5 gr of RL-17 3000 fps fussy bullet/hard to load

The 150 nos bt and the 160 accubond were tested with turret comeups to 500 meters. Both bullets shot very well.

RL-17 makes the 284 win shine! I sold my sporter 7 rem mag saw no reason for the duplication of performance.

I like that 160gr @ 3,000 plus. If I end up with similar numbers and smokin' accuracy,I may take the new 284 Elk hunting next fall. I'm thinking 23" for the barrel length as well. The barrel should be here in a couple more weeks. I hope 8).
