284 winchester on a short action

If your not going to run heavier than 168s, go for it. Your not really all that limited using a short action with 140-168s.

Good catch it was Hornady Interlocks and Sierra GK I will go back and see if I can find the IB & AB data

All I can find currently is 59.0 gn with the NAB 140 if I loaded more powder it must not have performed well
I'm pretty compressed with 55 grains running the 162s in a 2.98" case. Is it a Shehane case or standard ?
Std Win brand cases 65.884 H20 5 case average

Thanks everyone, there is a lot to think about.
I hope this is helpful MY rifle ONLY straight SAAMI you see the bullet, coal, distance to OG, and avg useable case capacity of my brass with bullets touching the lands. You can work your calculations from there.

i have heavier bullets 150 &162 ELD-X but have not worked the data yet

Ya I guess I didn't read your bullet choice close enough. The 140 class would allow much more powder in the case. Tunnel vision on my part. Sorry. I'm thinking the 162-168 class bullets

Have had a bunch of 284s over the years. The Rem 700 SA with a wyatt's mag box fed the worst. Interarms Mark X was okay. A tang safety Ruger SA was the best. Formerly a 6mm Rem that Ruger didn't need a thing done to it to feed fast or slow.

A friend purchased a NULA with a SA mag box of 3.1". It was the catalyst, I asked my gunsmith if it was possible to lengthen the Ruger's mag box. He did it! I can now load for an OAL of 3.050" and it still feeds fine. Right after lengthening the mag box I rebarreled (myself) and used a new reamer spec'ed out for the 168 VLD kissing the lands. Shoots accurately velocity of 2925 fps with 23" barrel. Nosler ballistic tips @ 3450 also accurate. Both loads use RL-17.

You may have to alter the rifle for proper feeding or maybe you won't. Get it set up and then IMO purchase a reamer for your rifle.

Well I have Two .284's on 700 Short Actions one SS Single Shot the other had a glued in Fowler .
Theses are F/Class Builds , shooting 180 Berger's with lots of throat .

Feeding never had a Problem. Ejecting a Fired case never a Problem.
Now Chamber a loaded Round and want to eject it ? You have to remove the Bolt !

Short Action Advantage : More Stocks available for Short Action , More Ridged ,less Flex .
