284 winchester on a short action

I'm thinking of building a 284 on a short action because thats what I have. I know it would be better to use a long action, but how much performance would I give up shooting 140 to168 gr bullets in 26 in barreled hunting rifle? Thanks Will

At a COLA of 2.850", you should be able to get 2850+ with Berger 168s in a 26-inch barrel. That's within 70 fps of what you can get out of a LA. So as B23 said, you aren't really losing anything at that bullet weight and below.

Wyatt's has a 3.100 OAL mag box for SA Rem 700, usually referred to as the Baney box, also.

If you really want to go all out on a SA Rem 700 you could do Wyatt's mid length setup which allows a OAL of 3.200+ but will require some machine work to the action.

I'm running a Rem 700 SA on a 284 Win. I'm using the PT&G bottom metal with accurate mags (minus binder plate) and my COAL is 2.980. I'm running 162 Amax bullets w/RL17 at 3000 fps from a 25" barrel. Can't really ask for more. It's a hunting rifle so the consensus on RL17 burning up barrels isn't a concern with how I use my rifles. So far I have over 1200 rounds on it and the throat looks pretty good. I've got a Baney Box but didn't use it on this particular build as 2.980 is enough length for plenty of case capacity.

It's a Defiance Tenacity short action that takes a bdl bottom metal, but I'm not sure about the cut out, A Wyatt's box may fit. I'll check it tomorrow.

Be aware, you want to special order your freebore.
SAAMI standard freebore on 284 is quite long, due to the firearms they were originally chambered for.
I tried the 140gr & 168gr VLDs in mine. Couldn't get to group worth a hoot!
160gr Sierra HPBT GameKing barely holds in the neck when touching the lands.

Thanks std7mag that's good to know

I figured awhile back a .140 throat would be a good average.
I have JGS doing one for me as we speak for use on my other
projects, such as short stepping for my wild cats.

You can also think of a zero free bore reamer, then custom
throat it for your needs.

I ordered mine with .090 and used a uni-throater to finish the throat for the FB for the 162s. Turned out perfect for the 168s also. I'm running 160 Partitions for deer alot and they shoot extremely well. I built this rifle strictly for the 160 class low drag hunting bullets. Thought I'd try the partitions to see how they shot and was pleasantly surprised at the accuracy to 500 yards. 3" groups and doubt I'd ever shoot them at a deer that far but in a pinch, they'd do it.

I built mine on a Whitworth Mark X action for hunting.
Unfortunately, i went with SAAMI spec chamber.
While the 168gr VLD still are too short (forget the 140s!), i've had decent accuracy from bullets that are jump tollerant.
Mostly the 150gr Ballistic Tip & ABLR, as well as the SST and GameKings.

My .284 is straight SAAMI and according to LabRadar I was pushing 139/140 Internonds & Accubonds 3200 fps with 62.0 gn RL-26 OAL of 2.96” - 2.98”

I hope that data point helps.

My 284 is in a Savage long action, 26" Criterion match chamber. If I remember correctly my COL is 3.160" which is about 20 thousands off the lands. I get about 2800 fps with 180 ELDM using H4831sc.

Don't do it!

In my experience, had nothing but problems with ejection, even using a single shot follower. This was on a blueprinted Rem 700 SA semi-custom build 6-284 Win.

Note the slight difference in size between the Norma reamer and Winchester reamer. Mine would not accept Norma or Lapua brass......

Best of luck!!

Your able to run 62 grains of powder in a 284 OAL cartridge of 2.96" ???
