.284 Winchester OAL 180 Bergers

Can somone please let me know what overall length you are using with the .284 and 180 bergers.
My barrel a 5R 1 in 9 32" Bartlein barrel has arrived and the gun smith has asked me for a dummy round to throat the barrel.
I want to keep the bullet out of the donut area, but how deep do you guys seat the Bergers upto this point.
If it helps my powder of choice will be H4831SC but will test with Reloader 17.
Please can you let me know your OAL to the bullet tip not ogive as compurators do vary.
Thanks
Dave

Hey dave i use 3.195 oal with 180 bergers and it works great ,H4831sc is all the powder you will need
its a deadly combo

Hi Grant thanks for the info, good to see a fellow shooter from GB.
What charge of H4831SC are you using and what sort of velocities are you getting?
Hoping to have the gun up and running soon if Neil is not to busy.
Cheers

.245 freebore on a 284 Shehane.....010 into lands is 3.195...zero is 3.185 oal..

I cut a case neck 1/2 out so you could see the bullet seated from a side profile. With a freebore of .245-.250, you'll have .030 room to jam the bullet, plus an extra .020 to allow for throat growth/;wash, and still have plenty of bullet in the neck for neck tension....I feel that this is a go in between....I would NOT go with the .189 that Kiff recommands...He is a great guy, and knows his business, but I can tell you that myself, and a lot of other F-Class guys feel the .189 freebore is way to short. I used my reamer(.189) freebore, and had my gunsmith throat it out to the case that I sent him...

Good Luck...

Thanks for that, my gunsmith is going to throat it to my requirements, hence the initial question.
Thanks for a very usefull reply.

Hey Dave
i shoot the sheahane version wich is the slightly improved 284 case and i use 56.5grns and am getting 2925fps out of a 32inch brrl ,i know some guys that use 284 win and use loads from 54grns and up to my load ,start low and work up slowly
are you planning to use it for f-class
Grant Taylor

Thats the plan Grant, need to get it up and running for the Imperial meet.
Wales need to do a bit better at the F class international on the final Friday.
I've joined the F class League, but I'm tempted to shoot F/TR class with my match rifle.
Want to put a theory to the test and see how I get on with heavier bullets.
My .308 will launch a 210 SMK with a BC of 6.4 at 2750 fps with 49.5 gn N550, its got to have an edge on 155's in the wind?
Can only get to do Bisley shoots this year sadly, as I have taken on more work commitments.
May catch up on the range.
Cheers
Dave

mine is on a long action 700 with badger m5 dbm and I had mine throated long and my dummy round is 3.25" it gives me tons of room for powder. currently I am pushing the 180s at 2915fps with my 26" benchmark 9 twist 3 groove barrel.

Hi Dave I shoot the 180 Berger's in my 7/07 AImo ..which is a 280 AI variant...using 30/06 brass...my FB is .190 and gives a LOAL to the tip of the bullet of ...3.8" ...the .284 case is .035 shorter so with a .190 FB your LOAL shuld be 3.45" +/- a lil"....seat one to that length and see for yourself....the ammount of bullet shank in the case neck shuld be ..~.200" ...this is what I use becasue the Berger 180 is the perfect bullet for long range...buttttt...sometimes you run out of em or just want to shoot something (experiment a lil") else like Sierras and if your FB is prohibitivly long you will not have enuff shank to hold em....with my .190 FB I can use (with plenty of grip on the bullet) everthing from Sierra 150 SMK's to the big Berger 180's....Kiff directed me this way and I am complety satisfied with the numbers and the results....OBTW...with this combo the Berger 180's are aprox .050" above the neck shoulder junction and far away from the donut area....Roger
