284 Winchester load questions

Hello guys,
I am wanting to try some 162 Hornady BTHP match bullets in my 284. Mainly because there a cheaper option to berger 180's and for mid range and club shoots. And since I cant find the 180's on every shelf and I want to save some of what I have.

So what loads work well and what should I expect in the accuracy dept? I have H4831 and H4350 CCI primers and Lapua brass. What seems to be a good starting seating depth.

Also as far as any of the loads go how much load differences are there between the Lapua and winchester brass as far as charge weights and capacity. I am still working up a load for the 180 hybrids so if anyone has some suggestions on some loads for that I am all ears. Thanks, Matt

I get the best results with the 162 A-Max 0.030" off the lands using RL-17 powder and Fed LR Match primers. I use WW brass, so I can't advise on charges for Lapua.

I've run the trajectories, and the 162 A-Max velocities are enough higher than the 180 hybrids that the wind drift is the same for both. I've been happy with the A-Max and haven't found a reason to pay the higher price for the Bergers.

This statement is simply wrong. Loaded to equal pressures in the same cartridge, the higher B.C. bullet will always produce less wind drift in the same condition. It may well be that your loads produce what you describe but that has nothing to do with the bullets' inherent characteristics. In order for a 162 A-Max to equal an unpointed 180 Hybrid at 2880 fps, the A-Max would require a muzzle velocity of 3165 fps. Not likely.

52.5grs of H4350 with WW brass and the 162 AMAXs. Deadly accurate it three different rifles. I have shot mine out to a mile. Was pleasantly surprised at how accurate they were at that range. I shot right with a 338 Lapua all the way out to a mile. Not sure but I think I am around .010 off. Another good load is 51.5 with the 168 Beerger.

I love the hybrids, have played with many powders and if you do your homework you can get amazing performance out of them. Some people won't believe it

Where were you seating the bullets? Touching? Jump? Jam? Thanks, Matt

Thanks Eric I am blind sometimes. Matt

In almost all my .284's I have had at least 5 thousands jam on them. Even the hybrids I have just had really good luck with them up on the lands.

I am going to see if someone has some win 284 brass they will sell. Since all I have now is a handful of Lapua for load development. Thanks for the replies guys. Matt

Matt,
I would just bite the bullet and go with Lapua. I have WW brass but some of it the primer pockets are so loose I wonder if the primer will fall out. My son in law started with WW but now has bought some Lapua and is having good luck with it. I would get a tapered expander button though. I tried going from 6.5 to 7MM and it pulls the necks to one side so I get .030 to .040 runout. You end up wasting your first shots to get it "Fire formed". With the tapered expander you won't have that problem.

I also checked my seating depth and I misspoke I started off shooting off the lands but am now in about .005 as best I can tell. (I get a couple of readings depending on how much pressure I put on my gauge.)

What barrel length and velocity you getting? Well after some information and thoughts I am gonna a save some money and bite the bullet for lapua. Thanks, Matt
