284 winchester choice

I posted a couple of weeks back about potentially re-chambering a rifle into .308 or .308win AI or anything else with potential that would feed through accuracy international mags in a rem pattern short action.

After a fair bit of thinking and talking to a few people, I'm now leaning towards .284 winchester,7mm/284) in a 9" twist barrel. It will fit and feed through my mags and has far superior ballistics to the .308. Downside is less barrel life than .308, although it will be noticeably more than its necked down 6.5/284 or 6/284 cousins. I'd form the brass by the simple expedient of necking up 6.5/284 lapua brass to 7/284.

The only concern at this stage is to load/feed rounds for LR hunting through the mags, I'd have to seat them pretty deeply - to about 2.800" or so. I'm a little concerned that I'd lose a bit of case capacity and potentially, accuracy, with some of the bullet shank probably going past the neck/shoulder junction. There'd be a fair jump to the rifling also. I'm thinking of the 162 A-max or 150 Nosler BT for the hunting application.

Target/comp work is not such a big deal due to having to single load by hand after each shot, so I can seat the match projectiles out as far as needed.

Any thoughts?

I shoot a 6.5-284 built on a Stiller TAC300 action in an AICS 1.5 LA stock. The .284 cartridge case will fit in the AICS long action magazine because this magazine is originally made for the .513" diameter .300WM cartridge and will accomodate the, approx.) .500" diameter .284 case easily. Feeding is no problem.

I'm not so sure that the AICS short action magazine will accomodate a .284 case, as it is designed to accept cases of the .308 family which measures about .470". It's possible the feed lips on the short AICS mag are too narrow. I'm not aware of anyone who has tried this combination, so I don't know for certain. Just speculating at this point.

I do know that there are a few riflebuilders here that frequently modify the short action AICS magazines to accept a cartridge with an OAL of over 2.9". George Gardner at G. A. Precision is one of them.

I've checked and the .284 case seems to feed just fine into the .308 accuracy international mags. Could probably spread the lips just a shade but apart from that, the only issue appears to be cartridge OAL...

I'd say you'll need a long action.

Why not a long action Tikka 695 as a base. Its single stacked and the action is nice and slick with a good mag system.
