284 Win with "the verticals"

I knew you were shooting F-Class -- and pretty darn well! I thought I was asking the question of one of the other posters. My bad.

While I love my Shehane, I have always lusted for a Dasher. I have a reamer but have never cut a barrel with it. That is on my bucket list.

So much talk of Dashers and 284s ;D. Both my current F open calibers. Both totaly different in shooting style. With my Dasher I keep my shoulder away and keep my eye on the flags, just tap the trigger when the flags look good. Sometime the Dasher has ridden back in the bags and shot a 10 as it falls out of the front rest.
My 284s have been very different. In 3 different stocks, 4 different barrels, 2 actions, gun hold has been critical for consistant verticle. I find that unlike the Dasher, I have to concentrate on both hold and flags.
Another thing to think about if neck clearance. If you run the same .001" clearance that PPC shooters use, you will probably get more verticle. Scale your neck clearance up to .003"
JHardy, gotta agree with what you say about digital scales causing you to be a grain out, it has happened to me.

You brought up an interesting point I have not considered. Are all the guys that are getting vertical with the 284 normally shooting 6mm Dashers?

Could it be they are holding the 284's as lightly as they do their Dashers and the vertical is coming from gun movement?

Not to criticize anyone, just looking for a possible "cure".

I believe that gun movement is a contributing factor, but I don't know how much compared to other possibilites. My gun torques in the bags as it recoils. I didn't realize this until I watched someone else shoot my rifle last year. This person is a national-level F T/R shooter so I am reasonably sure that it was the gun not him. I have another friend that regularly shoots a 30 BooBoo in F-Open and he has to take a firm grip on the gun. I have started holding more frimly as a result of these experiences and I believe it has helped.

Very interesting,I haven't shot my 6.5*284 since the finnals @ the deep creek range @ Missula Mt, but I had about 4.5" of vertical in my best group. I have allways shot the gun free recoil. I think I may get it out today and do some playing with it. Mine did shoot the best with about .001 neck tension

I used by 284 before I had the Dasher and I use a totaly different hold for each. I even use a slipperier rear bag for the Dasher than I do the 284, so the dasher free recoils, while the 284 has more drag. (but consistant drag). I ave experimented with holds on both and found which each one likes.
When shooting my 284, I can often tell by the way the gun recoils, whether my shoulder was into it as much, as so whether it is likely to hit higher or lower. If I dont have my shoulder into it as much, it hits higher and vica versa. Not only that, but I use a joystick rest, and if I find I am trying to force the gun to one side with my shoulder, instead of just the joystick, the shot will hit off to the side. So there is no free lunch with the heavier/slower 7mm bullets, better in the wind, but it takes some concentration away from the flags.
Overall, If I am tired after nightshift, I get more verticle. If I am concentrating on my hold well, I get less verticle.
