284 Win Twist Rate

I'm in the process of filling out the ER Shaw ordering form. I wanted my twist rate for the 284 Win to be a 1 in 9 twist. But their two options are 1 in 9 1/2, and 1 in 8 twist. I'm sending a Remington 03 action that was sporterized by my grandfather, then passed to my uncle, and now it belongs to me. My uncle said back in the 80's it was a tac driver but over time the accuracy has gone way down hill to being in the paper plate size group at 100yds. It was professionally sporterized, but the stock has seen better days. The action is as smooth as I've ever seen on an 03, and the Timney Trigger is superb. Anyhow I'm getting off topic. This barreled action is being sent to Shaw to have a 26" barrel put on with a medium sporter contour, then to have the action and barrel reblued to match. Yes I know it'll be heavy, but it's not going to be my Mtn Rifle. It's going to be my long range deer/bear and possibly elk gun, while hunting from a blind or treestand. But, I'd also like to be able to shoot steel as far as my abilities will let me. I don't plan on shooting the 195gr bullets but I'd say my bullet weight range will be from 140gr to 175gr if that, but definitely in the 160gr range. Should I just go with the 1 in 9 1/2 twist? As I feel the 1 in 8 may have trouble with the lighter end of my preferred spectrum..

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

You are right about the faster twist being trouble with lighter bullets.

I have a 7mm08 with a 9.5" twist and accuracy with140 & 175 gr bullets is the same.

If it's a hunting rifle that will never shoot 180+ gr bullets, I'd go with the 9.5" twist.

The 9.5 will stabilize the 175/180s fine. Beyond that, I'd go with the 8 Twist. I don't think you'd turn enough RPM with a 284 in an 8 twist barrel shooting 150s to blow jackets off the bullet. That's just my opinion. 160-180 grain bullets will not cause any issues with an 8 twist barrel.
