284 win to 280 ai -Mauser 98-action

Can a Herters 284 win be reamed to 280 Ackley Improved ?
Originally purchased to seat 160gr bullets to a longer OAL
Action & Magazine are more suited to these loads,then the
restricted space of my Browning Micro Medallion 284.
Being an avid reloader I would like to convert this Mauser
to 280AI if possible.
Thoughts and suggestions?

No.

The original .284 case is 0.500" at the head while the .280 AI is only 0.473. The .280 AI reamer is smaller in diameter than the .284 chamber.

Reloading 284 for rebated rim,strong case,I was thinking length of
action,not diameter.

I have heard of improving the .284 to get a bit more case capacity; cut the taper in half and blow out the shoulder to 40 degrees. That's supposed to get an extra 3 gr of case capacity. I haven't done it myself - I've been able to select the right bullets and powders to get the job done with a straight .284. I primarily shoot the 162 gr A-Max and can get 2930 fps from a 22" barrel using Reloder-17 in Winchester brass. Is that enough for your needs?

284 win is a Great round, as is, No Doubt.Have used the 20" Micro Medallion for yrs.My Hunt Loads have been 145 Grand Slam-over
56gr.-IMR 4350 & 140 Sierra Pro Hunter-over 50gr.-RL15.
Both loads Hit same point @200yd zero.Win. brass-CCI BR-2
primers.This combo took 5x5 Bull Elk @ 334yds.-10,500' elevation.
Both bullets recovered under hide of off shoulder! I like the GS stamp on base of bullet,for ID factor-who hit what occasion.
I will try your recipe with the longer magazine/action of the Mauser.
Working up 160gr BARNES-XLC loads now,Hoping for a pass through load,on Heavy game-Moose & Elk Load.

What barrels were used on Herters Mauser Sporter rifles?
26" tube on my 284 win is moa with 160 Accubond over,52gr-RL-19 @ 3.180 oal
And 160gr BARNES XLC,over 56gr.RL-22 @ 3.040 oal
Both loads hit center @ 200 yds
Can't help but think of Charlie Fountain,rouge of a Irish angle he was,saying,
Herters garuntee was unique, If your not happy with the product ,we're happy to send another just like it! Say What?
