284 win Superformance powder

Hey guys I'm wanting to try the Superformance powder in my short barreled 284win.

I'll load up a ladder to find pressure and get an idea of if the barrel likes it. But I can't find any data at all for it in this cartridge.

I'm running 162g Amax with a long coal of 3.180 inch.

Can anyone help with some data for this case.

Your mileage may vary, but there is a reason there is so much of that powder available. I didn’t get very consistent es’s or sd’s with it. At all!!! Very inconsistent. But I can tell you at around 54 gr the velocity was impressive. But that was about it.

Like fotohunt, a friend and self both tried Superformance in newly built 284s with 180s for F-Class around three years ago, got impressive MVs, but couldn't get consistency. I never got so far as using it in a match, but my friend did in a GB F-Class 5-match league round and had a miserable time. His load that had been stunning during testing was all over the place, also exhibiting pressure signs, presumably largely due to temperature change.

We bought the powder during one of the many spells that saw the more popular Hodgdon / ADI extruded grades become totally unobtainable in the UK for long periods of up to a year duration. I switched to Viht N165 for 175/180s and N160 for the 160gn TMK, two powders which I've used exclusively ever since in the cartridge. They won't give as high MVs as Superformance, but are very consistent, are nearly always available here, and N165 in particular has a reputation in the 284 for enhancing barrel life.

I haven't tried superformance powder just because 4831 and 4350 is very accurate powder choices for the 284. I have used and am using RL17 for better velocities in a short action platform and 25" barrel. I'm using 53 grains of RL17 and getting just over 3000 fps and no pressure what so ever. Actually compressed it about 55 grains or just under and around 3100 fps. My OAL is 2.975. Accuracy is very very good as well. This is also with the 162 Amax. Also using 160 Nosler partitions and getting the same accuracy.

I have found that I get my best results after picking a powder that many use for that specific caliber. For the 284 win, one of those powers is 4831SC Good luck.

Thanks for the info and feedback guys. It's not sounding that great is it.

I have a suppressed 17" barreled 284win 'super bush pig' as we call them here in NZ.

It's a rechambered T3 7mm08. I got the smith to use the reamer with a .317 neck.

I'm necking up lapua brass and initially had an early pressure problem, which I worked out was basically not enough neck clearance at the base of neck/shoulder junction after necking up the brass and not neck turning.

Have since turned the necks down into the shoulder and now able to increase powder charge and velocity a bit.

I've been running the 162g Amax at 2730 fps with great accuracy with H414.

I've just realised I havnt actually cut down into the shoulder enough, so am about to test a ladder a little higher with the H414 and also 7828ssc which went well in initial testing a while back.

I know I should be able to get up to 2800 with the 162g from my 17" barrel.

I spoke to a bloke a few weeks back that also ran a short 284 hunting rifle, he mentioned he was getting good velocity with the SF powder, but I never got his load info and now can't track him down.

Anyone using RL26?

I have a 22" barrel on my .284 and had the best results with the 162 grain A-Max using Reloder 17; I have muzzle velocities of ~2930 fps and good consistency. Federal match primers were the most consistent with RL-17. That's more than 150 fps faster than other powders I tried, including H4350, H4831, and RL-19. You won't get as much velocity in a 17" barrel, but I think 2800 fps is a reasonable goal. The load I worked up was warm, but not close to max.

H4831SC and don't look back. :) I have two in the XP100, 15" and 16" w/break. Both shoot best with this powder using Bergers, Accubonds and Sierra Game Kings in 140 & 150 grns.
