284 Win./ Shehane Length

Next year will be time to rebarrel my 6.5 Creedmoor, as good as a 6.5 like that is for 1000 yard and 600 yard is makes me wonder if I'd be better off for the 1000 yard stuff with a 7MM. I was first thinking of getting a magnum bolt faced short action for 7SAUM but then I remembered the 284's .473 case head and that would actually work in my Creedmoor's action - I could get a 7MM cheaper that way because I wouldn't have to buy another action then.

What really has me wondering though is do you run into the same overall length issues with the 284 or Shehane as you do with the 6.5-284? Issues being that you can run it in a short action but you're often times better off in a long action because of bullet loading length.

I'm trying to decide if I'm going to keep this action in a 6.5 CM, go down to a 6SLR or go up to a 284 Shehane and if you guys are running the 284s only in long actions and they're handicapped in short actions it'll help me make my decision. Thanks

Wayne

My 284 Shehane is built on a short action, I can't eject a loaded round, but if I have to I just pull the bolt out and it works.

To me there is no need for a long action, since the fired case can be ejected without a problem.

It's more of a problem if you are a sling and irons guy, as you only have one hand. Hell, I can't get a 260rem with 140vlds or a 308 with 155.5.s out of my short actions either.

Most people I know shooting in F-Class competition shoot the 180 Bergers loaded to a COAL of 3.200 inches plus. They work fine loaded single. I have another barrel with a 30-06 length case and the 180 Berger seated out and it also loads fine for F-Class and ejects the empties without problems on the same action.

Okay, it sounds like this will probably be the way to go then. Crunching the numbers the 180 VLD and 162 AMax really shine.

Now I just have to figure out who I'd send the work out to for chambering and dies. Anybody know?

If you want to go the Shehane route, I have a turn neck reamer (.313" neck) and a set of custom Hornady competition dies made to my reamer specs for sale. Mark Pharr of Tumbleweeds Custom Rifles does my chamber work. He could use my reamer to cut your chamber and the dies would be a perfect fit.

The reamer is not for sale, just the dies. If you get someone else to do the chambering and are interested in the dies, you can still use my reamer to cut your chamber.

Let me know.

Erik,

I may end up having to take you up on that but it wouldn't be until next year when I rebarrel this action. Thank you

Wayne

When I ordered my reamer I didn't know what would work, so my reamer has a .140" freebore and then I also have a throating reamer to go the rest of the way. My COAL is 3.200" with a 180 Berger VLD.
