284 win reloading

What's a good starting charge for 555? 32" Krieger 4groove straight 284 and Berger 184's Lapua Brass
I have the same setup except my barrel is 30". Mine is in tune between 52.0 and 52.5 grains and shoots between 2,775 and 2,820 fps with those charges. I know this doesn't give you a starting charge, but it gives you some comparable information to determine a starting load to work up. Your gun could be/is different than mine so your results could vary.

Awesome, really appreciate it. A fairly new powder so not a lot of info out there. Going to try both 555 and 4831sc.

Out of those four I would argue the overwhelming favorite is RL16. Lots of people used to shoot it until became unobtanium. RL16 is super temp stable. 17 isn’t.

Don’t forget about n555 if you can come across any.
I know you guys are liking it in 6.5-7 PRCs but are guys also finding success with it in 284s over 4350? Would you expect less barrel lie because N555 is double based

So far I haven't shot a barrel out to where I wouldn't use it at least for a local match and my highest barrel is somewhere around 1200 rounds. Once I finally shoot some barrels out I'll have a better idea. I have 4 working barrels right now and a couple that were a slightly different chamber that only got to about 1000rds before I retired them (but not because they were shot out).

I assume yo ae talking about the 6.5 7PC? What about N555 vs H4350 in 284. Are guys starting to prefer the N555? If so, why?

Oooh, yeah I only did one barrel and didn't shoot it out all the way before switching over to the 6.5/7 sorry. I have one friend who's been using 555 in his straight 284 for a while and he swears by and hasn't mentioned any kind of decreased barrel life but I haven't specifically asked him.

Just got a jug of N555. I have the same setup including barrel, brass, bullet. What was your starting load if you don’t mind sharing?

My vote goes to 4831sc, my Load was with 183 SMK and 53.0 grns
I believe 4350 is not as optimal in burn rate being a little fast for the heavier 180 and up projectiles
However 4350 worked great with bullets in the 150 - 162 gr range

Shooting 284 Win w 180 hybrids in Lapua brass, longish barrel, i tested N555 from 51.5 grains (2745 fps) to 52.9 grains (2789 fps) and got the MV as (indicated).

I wound up settling on RL16 which seemed quite a bit faster than N555, but I could go back and test N555 at 53.0+ to get a little more speed and see how it groups.

While not 180 gr, I hunt with Barnes 120 gr and tested heavily. My rifle could do no wrong with IMR-4166. The largest group it shot was .4" and best was under .1" but sadly not available now.
N-555 and RL-17 also shot very well.
