284 win reloading

I know H4350 seems to be the go to powder for the 284 win, but I was just curious if anyone has done any solid load development work with the .284 win and the 180g class of bullets (I’m currently using the Berger 180g Hybrids), using any of the following four powders:

1. RL-16
2. RL-17
3. Hybrid 100V
4. Stabill 6.5

I know RL-16 and 17 are on either side of H4350 for powder burn rate, and neither are likely anywhere near as temp stable as H4350.

I have some reserves of the four powders above and it would be nice to have a backup plan that doesn’t involve finding any H4350 in an emergency.

Dave.

Out of those four I would argue the overwhelming favorite is RL16. Lots of people used to shoot it until became unobtanium. RL16 is super temp stable. 17 isn’t.

Don’t forget about n555 if you can come across any.

I don’t have any N555 but I do have 16 lbs of RL-16. Thanks John. Love your videos and I’m a big fan of what you do for the sport.

Just ordered an 8lb jug of the N555. Thanks for the tip. I’ll play with after this season so I don’t put too many rounds on the new barrel.

I recently started running the hybrid, 100 V, I haven’t had a chance to test it in the summer for temperature stability, but it seems to be a pretty good powder so far.

I have ran A-4350 with 180 HB. It took more to get to my H-4350 load ?
I am liking what I see will run a Spring Match for test #3 ?

Lots of A-4350 to be had ?

I had one barrel that didn't seem to like any of the go-to powders On a whim I tried N160 and found the barrel loved it! I haven't used it since but do have 18 lbs around just in case

Dave, I shoot R26 in my 284 with the 180's. I use vv160 with the 168's. Both are very accurate.

@Fuj tried the N555 in his shortened 284 Win wildcat.
He ended up selling me the remaining 7.5lb of the 8lb jug.

Draw your own conclusion...

I completely agree with F Class John. My two main powders in straight 284 Win are RL-16 and N555. A lot of people I shoot with swear by H4831SC. I avoid RL-17 at all costs. It has teased me in the past and then craps out.
It was years back but I’d be on the H4831sc bandwagon for 284. Shot my best group with it, still have the picture of it. This was before I learned everyone hypes rl16 and a few big names hoard that 555.

Had an accurate load with it at low velocity. Powder is bulky, and
if your not running a .240 throat or longer and loading long, you
won't get enough powder in your case to make it worth while......

I'm running N165 with 180 Scenar L's, good velocity and accuracy.
@Laurie posted some info on N165 that looked promising, also since H powders got so scarce here in Canada and elsewhere, I decided to switch everything over to VV powders which I can get with some regularity and cheaper in the 1 Kg.(2.2 pounds) jug or larger.

What's a good starting charge for 555? 32" Krieger 4groove straight 284 and Berger 184's Lapua Brass
