.284 win or 7mm SAUM

Hellow Everyone! this is My first post here. I am thinking about building up a nice F-class gun, but I am haveing a hard time on desideing what cartridge to use, the ones I have been thinking of are the .284 win or the 7mm SAUM. what are your thoughts and recommendations, I am still new to all this, but I like what I have read about these rounds.

Both would serve you well accuracy wise, but the 6.5-284 Lapua brass would tilt the favor somewhat. The 284 can achieve close to the same velocity, and barrel life should be longer.

Many of the top 1000 yard F-Class competitors are using the 284 Winchester or the 284 Shehane. There are also plenty of people still shooting the 6.5X284 with great success. Charles Ballard is the now two-time FCNC with a straight 284 Win and Grant Taylor from the UK finished 3 in the Worlds with a 284 Shehane. Most of the rest of the UK Team was shooting the 7mm WSM but I think they are now looking at some variation of the 284 Win to improve barrel life. I shoot a 284 Shehane and it looks like I will get around 2500 rounds of competitive accuracy running the 180 Berger VLD at 2900+. I don't believe that my experience is unusual.

Read the 284 Win section of the 7mm Cartridge Guide on this site:

http://www.6mmbr.com/7mm284.html

There is a reamer print for the 284 Shehane in that section. There is also a lot of useful information about most of the 7mms people are shooting in competition.

i would go 284 win or the shehane version if i were you its accuaracy is superb you get the best brass in the world Lapua ,its easy to tune ,it might be behind on velocity but it gains it back in accuaracy
its a no brainer ;D

I got a 7 saum and love it, after all the horror story's I heard about rem brass, was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. It will get you up there in velocity without having to load super hot. Well designed cartridge, long neck,30 degree shoulder, and powder capacity just right.

I have one of each and cant seem to make up my mind as to which one is better... As long as it's a 7mm I like em ;D

Chris.
The seater die is easy. Just have your gunsmith run the chambering reamer into a Wilson 284 Win In-line seater and you are good to go. I had a custom full length resizer made from my reamer print and a couple of fired cases. There are several people who can do that.

Here are a couple of choices: Neil Jones Custom Products http://www.neiljones.com/html/threaded_dies.html and the one I used because I already had the die body for other cartridges Warner Tool http://www.warner-tool.com/ Jim Carstensen I believe can make them but I don't have his contact information. You could also have a resizer reamer made to go with you chambering reamer and have your gunsmith make the die from a Newlin blank then send it off to be hardened.
