Posted this on the reloading section. Maybe this forum location is better suited for the question. I'm building a 284 win for a Rem 700 SA gun. My plans are to load 162 Amax, 168 vld and 168 accubond LR. I will be using bottom metal mags that will fit COAL rounds from 2.850 - 3.050, depending on which mag I use. I'm concerned with seating these bullets at those lengths. Want to make sure I will be seating the bullets properly. They will be deep in the cartridge so want to be sure they make contact with the correct area on the bullet so they don't slip. Any input will be appreciated. Thanks.

The bullets you listed are all still very long to fit in a SA platform. I have only loaded the 140 grain and lighter bullets for my Win. Model 100 autoloader and an XP pistol. I suggest you look at the Berger 168 Classic Hunter bullet as it has a profile more suited to SAAMI spec chambers if you want to shoot the heavier bullets. I will try to load each bullet in the next couple days to give you a definitive answer

The 150 Nosler accubond LR is a solid option also. Considered mid weight or upper light weight for 7mm. Just don't have any bullets that I'm speaking of and really don't want to purchase 100 of each to find out the enevitable. Hoping someone has experience with the subject. I too own the Winchester mod 100. Don't load for it tho. I have 5 boxes of 150 gr power points for it. It's my son's gun now. Strictly a whitetail gun. Looking forward to your results.

I bought the 100 out in Idaho years ago as I have a soft spot for pre-64's and the price was right. My wife shot her mtn. lion with it the following year. Nosler Ballistic Tip did the job. Nice, short, light rifle. Grandpa bought a .308 Model 100 for Grandma in '63. It is now in my collection.

Just grabbed a 162 amax and a set of calipers off the reloading bench for some rough measurements. Bearing surface of the bullet doesn't really start until about 0.75 or 0.80 inches from the tip, I wouldn't want to seat any deeper than that.

Case length for the 284 is 2.17, so add 0.8 to that to get a rough sense of the shortest you could go... 2.97 OAL. I think you could make the 162 amax work if you ran the longer mag that allowed a 3.05 OAL. It would be in there deep, but the entire neck of the case would be on the bearing surface of the bullet.

Thanks for the research. That will keep me in that chamber with the short action. Waiting on some bullets now. 162 Amax are tough to find. Berger and accubond are out there. Just pricier.

I've seen a fair bit on the reloading forum here and at Snipers Hide, usually under $.30/rd. I picked up 600 of them a couple months ago for $0.28/rd.

May I ask what your intended purpose for the rifle is? I have hunted with an A-bolt SA in 284 for a long time. The A-max is a great long range bullet, but not great for anything close larger than deer. At long range it really comes into its own. Partitions are hard to beat, and accubonds are a good all around bullet if your rifle likes them.

Believe it or not I have had good results with Speer 145 BTSP and hot cores. The BTSP will have jacket seperation at close range on muley's but the core has always passed through. The Hot Core stays together better.

My main use will be for whitetails. Ranges maxing out at maybe 600-650. Not necessarily using Amax bullets but considering the 168 Accubond lr as well. I will use this for playing in the ground hog meadows as well. Always good to know drop and windage on whitetails at those long ranges. What better to do all the homework on than ground hogs. Figured the Amax bullets would shine for that purpose. Economical too. Don't plan on lighter bullets for deer than 150. If my intended use is wooded country, I'll load lighter with 150s.

The 160 Accubond is about 1.405" OAL, bearing surface is about .576" from the tip, and gives a minimum cartridge OAL of about 2.750", but as you can see, that is about .576" of bullet in the case, but that is the minimum and you still have room to load it out to your mag minimums but it will eat up some powder space.

Also, a 154 interbond is 1.375" OAL, the bearing surface is .742 from the tip. It is a good bullet, but in my opinion, suited best to under 400 yds, it needs good resistance at longer ranges to initiate expansion. The SST is better at longer ranges, where the Accubond is good at short and long ranges.

Lee does have a non-cataloged factory crimp die on there website and they are usually in stock. Also, on that multi-purpose 284, I believe he was shootinf accubonds out of his short action for hunting. And try RL17, if your rifle likes it it can really boost velocities, I am still working on it to develope a load, I use IMR and H4350 a lot, with some RL19, especially with 120 TTSXs,

I know you indicated building on a short action, is that because you have one on hand? If not, why not go with a long action (only about 3 oz heavier) and have the barrel throated longer for the heavier bullets you want to use?

Yes, it's the action I have. Also have the bottom metal and mags. I currently have a 284 in a long action. I strictly use 180 Bergers thru it. It's a 30 inch barrel gun I use for 1000 yards. Love the performance and accuracy but don't need the high velocities of that for what I'm going to use it for. Figured most would wonder why not a LA?

In addition, I own a winchester model 100 in 284. I just may put together some reloads for that as well.
