284 win loading

Anybody out there know if Berger 168vld, Nosler accubond 168 LR or 162 Amax bullets will properly seat down to 2.850-3.025 i a 284 win cartridge ? Using these loads in bottom metal mags with those oal specs. SA Rem 700 action. I know, people always ask why SA ? It's a walking hunting gun. Have some 30" tubes in 284 in LA actions for 180 vld bullets. Bench guns. Not carry guns. This is a whitetail gun I'm planning on building. 600 yd max on deer. We'll beyond that for ground hogs as well. Any input will help decide if this build will function for my needs. Thanks

Makes sense to me since that is the idea behind the creation of the cartridge. It was designed to facilitate .30-06 case capacity in a short action length rifle.

Sorry, I can't help with your question. I clicked on your post as I find the 284 case quite interesting.

With 2.85 OAL and a 162 Amax you will have about 0.45 inch of bullet seated into the case below the neck/shoulder junction. With the Nosler it would be closer to 0.53 inches into the case. A little better if you go out to 3.025 OAL but still a bit stuffed down into the case. Should work fine though, I would think.

Any reason not to do a 7mm-08 if this is a short action deer hunting rifle for 600 yards and less?

2 reasons. Don't really want to buy another die set and I have a heap of 6.5- 284 brass. Besides the that I believe even though I have to drop way into the case with the bullet, I will still have more case capacity than the 7-08 offers. I may have went to it if I couldn't make those mentioned bullets work in my mags. May have had to use more of a standard hunting style bullet. 284 win factory ammo (if you can find it) is 50.00+ a box. 7-08 is everywhere. Then again maybe it's the challenge of the project. Winter is long so I'll have time to do some experimenting. Thanks

I will be using this gun for some ground hog shooting as well at ranges well beyond 600 so getting a bit more velocity and better trajectory will be nice. Figured I could drop down to the Nosler accubond 150 LR if I needed better velocities (.611 BC ) and still have good numbers for long range. Main goal is staying with a short action. Just preference.

You can use some basic math calculations to make your own determination of what will work. The data is out there, you just need to apply it to your specific situation.

284 Win case length is 2.17". The neck/shoulder junction is at 1.885". The difference between the two is the length of the case neck, 0.285".

With an OAL of 3.025" and a case length of 2.17", that means that you need the front edge of the bearing surface of the bullet to be no more than 0.855" from the tip of the bullet.

Data for Berger bullets is here:

http://www.bergerbullets.com/pdf/Quick-Reference-Sheets.pdf

The 7mm 168g VLD Hunting has a nose length of .771". The bullet length is 1.433 and the base to ogive is .705. Based on this these measurements the nose will stay above the top of the case neck, so it should work.

Quick measurements with a set of calipers on a 162 amax suggests the same (I posted on your other thread).

Don't have all the details for the Nosler 168 LRAB, other than the bullet OAL of 1.49".

If I can get enough accubond 150 LR bullets, they will be my main deer bullet for this setup. Thinking they will work as good or better than the other two.
