.284 Win. Lapua Brass, How Many Reloads?

How many quality match firings are you getting with your Lapua necked up .284 Win brass?

Using 6.5 284 Lapua necked up to 7 and fireformed to 284 shehane. On hot loads with rl17 think 2950 fps with 180 Bergers out of a 26" barrel got 4 or 5 then the primer pockets got loose. With lighter loads I have yet to destroy a piece of brass with 10+ firings

With a true 284 Win, running at max load H4831SC, firing 180gr bullets, four firings are manageable, the fifth firing is questionable at best and I wouldn't trust the cases beyond sighters and have learned the hard way that you better not use them for the match rounds. Yes, the 284 Win has beyond great accuracy potential when you reload properly and avoid shortcuts. It is not a forgiving cartridge as something like a 6 Dasher. It is much more predictable and repeatable than a 6.5x284.

it all depends how hot load you are running. Using RL17 and 162AMAX @ 3050fps, you could destroy brass with two to three reloads. With tamer reload and periodical annealing, you can go to 10+ reloads.

The factory answer here is that Lapua expects to see a minimum of ten firings, assuming that the loads are within the CIP or SAAMI pressure limitations, and the case isn’t being excessively worked during the reloading process. By excessive, that means not moving the case necks too far via an extremely tight neck ID within the die, and a large expander ball to open the necks back up for bullet seating. This would also include not setting the shoulders back excessively, which will cause head separations prematurely due to headspace issues. But, this also doesn’t require any additional work on the cases, such as annealing and so on.

As with anything of this nature, your mileage will vary, and this is why they can’t guarantee ten firings; it’s simply too many factors that are out of their control. But if you’re losing cases to primer pockets expanding well before those ten firings, that’s a load problem, not a case issue.
