284 Win. Issues

I just bought and have started reloading for a .284 Win. The barreled action was put to together by GAP, and chambered in .284 Match.

When I seat the bullet into the case, I am getting a flare at the case mouth, making the round very difficult to chamber. I am using Redding Match dies, and bumping the shoulder approx. .0015" after each firing.

The only thing I can think of is that they may need to be cut to length. However, some rounds that have the "flare" are shorter then others that chamber w/o an issue. I plan on cutting all to length before reloading again. Hopefully this takes care of the issue.

Any advise? :o

You may have a tight neck chamber. You will need the reamer to measure the neck of the chamber and then you will need to measure a loaded round. If a loaded round is greater then your up for neck turning.

Also make sure you chamfer the inside and outside of the case necks where the bullets are seated.

Thanks for the input.

It's not a tight neck. Loaded rounds measure approx. .314-.315. Fired rounds are approx. .317-.319 (I can't remember exactly). I also chamfered the necks inside and out.

I dont understand how or why I'm gettig this "flare" when seating. I have never encountered this before.

Are the bullets being seated with an inline seater. Are you using the standard chamfer tool or a vld tool.In the standard seaters you can easily cock the bullet stretching the mouth. How much seating pressure is there. You should be able to seat it with your pinky finger,in another words easy seating.Any reasistance and somethings wrong.

Again, thanks for the input. I got home today and found my Wilson case holder and Sinclair chamber gauge on the door step. I cut down a case to use the gauge insert. The chamber length I have a 2.192". My brass is anywhere from 2.150-2.165". So this tells me its the seating die. However, I am using the Redding Competition seating die. I have used Redding Competition dies exclusively for a few years now and love them. Could it really be the die?

For info I am using the Berger 180 Hybrids and Lapua 6.5-284 brass necked up to .284. How do I tell if I have a "bad batch"? I guess I could try some other bullets, but I hate to waste time and money.

I am using a VLD chamfer tool and there is very little resistance when seating the bullet.

No expander button

When you expanded your brass did you use the 6.5 Expander first, then the .284, then back down to your desired bushing size.

I would measure the OD of some of the bullets, maybe a few are oversized causing the flare, since you stated some work and some don't.

post a pic of the flare?? have you got your seating die adjusted too low and the actual die is hitting the mouth of the neck?

+1 post a picture of the flare. If the brass is fine when you go to seat the bullet, and flared when it comes out, then the seating die itself is causeing the flare by physically engaging the brass.

An easy way to seeif its the die is to run a piece of brass up into teh die with no bullet. If it comes out flared, then your die is cause the problem. The only way I can think this is happening is if the die is settoo low and engaging the brass. I would suspect that the forcereuired to do that is fairly high.
