284 WIN. HUNTING RIFLE ?

Im moving away from magnums and Im leaning hard towards a 284 win. or 280 rem. in a L/A with a 23''in. barrel and plan on shooting 150gr. 160gr. bullets. I have never had either of these calibers so I was looking at getting some advice on them more so on the 284 win.

Thanks

I would recommend the .280 Remington. The .284 Winchester is a fine cartridge, but the case neck is much shorter than the .280. This requires heavier (longer) bullets be seated so that the bullet bases are deeper in the case. Comparing velocities is misleading as the .284 is commonly loaded to somewhat higher pressures than the .280. This is generally attributed to the
.280 being originally chambered in the Remington 740 auto-loader, which had a somewhat weaker action than bolt actions. Regardless, careful loading can easily match or exceed .284 performance and still be safe.
While not having worked with any .284s, I have had excellent results with a few .280s.

284 is very easy to work with. I think and could be wrong that gunworks uses the Berger 180 hybrid in their hunting
Loads and the 284 works really well with the 180 hybrid and can reach 2800 FPS + with quarter moa accuracy and mild recoil.

I use a 284 on a long action. It has a 22 inch tube suppressed with a 1x9.5 twist. I shoot 168 vld in the .2 at 2803 fps. I use Lapua brass. I killed an elk with it at 919 yards last year. If I were to go 280 it would be the AI version, All three rounds will suit you well. But there is a reason the match shooters shoot 284. I quit the magnums years ago for the same reasons.

Go with the Winchester because of the brass. Especially if your going to hunt at longer distances. But as mentioned above LA is the only way to go. Running Straight 284win at 2,780fps with RL22 and really long seated Berger 195s in Lapua brass. It’s got a bunch of down range energy and pretty darn accurate with a nearly pencil thin Bartlein #3b.

The long action is the best choice for the 284 if using 180s. Mine gets real close to 3000 fps with Reloader 17. It has a 28" barrel and it is fairly mild to shoot. I use my short action 284 when shooting 162s. I also push that 162 @ 3000 fps with the same powder. It has a 25" barrel and it's my preferred deer rifle. Carry weight is around 10.5 lbs scoped.

284 Winchester - gonna have to build a new one..... My last one was stolen and it was like losing part of the family.

The best best option for these cartridges for hunting is the 110ttsx barnes bullet. Low recoil, excellent accuracy, flat trajectory. No lead fragments in meat. Also penetrates as well or better than heavy lead core.

Either will work great. I am surprised the the AI crowd has not swarmed on you telling you to do 280AI. Just say no to any AI cartridge!! With 2020 just around the corner no need to do that.

Never build any rifle off of a short action if you ever think you might want to run VLD bullets or heavier than the conservative norm for cartridge available 20 years ago. You will run out of OAL in the magazine area. Personally I just tell people to never buy or build a short action anything just say no. I own short actions but would never use one to build anything I wanted to run VLD's in!

284 Win brass can be hard to get at times and I have never seen factory loaded ammo for it either in real life on a store shelf. 280 Brass is easier to find and can be more easily made from the widely available cases like 30-06, 270, 25-06 etc......I have actually seen loaded factory ammo on the shelf before rare but have seen it in the wild.

If the action you use is "intermediate" in nature by todays standards like a Mauser 98 the 284 is a better choice than 280 but in any modern Long Action no advantage to 284 Win.

284 Winchester has an accuracy advantage due to the shorter powder column (I think).

I know 284 has won a few championships recently. I'm not sure if 280 ever competes.

It might not be a huge advantage but to say 284 has none is ignoring the one thing we should all be looking for on this forum.

I have a 284 on a FN Mauser. Unknown barrel but it shoots very well with 140 or 150 grain Barnes or Nosler Partitions and 4350. Under an inch for 3 shots. 2800-2900 fps. 50-54 Gr depending on bullet.

I am shooting the 280 right now with shortish freebore. 160g at 2950 with IMR 7828 shoots very tiny groups, and the Sierra 160g btsp is a fantastic short range(300 and under) deer bullet. The load I shoot is in the Nosler manual #4.

Having both calibers I have to go with SSL, and the one thing I haven't seen mentioned is how well the longer tapered case of the two eighty feeds. Not saying the 284 is bad, but for a hunting rig I much prefer the 280 myself.

Thank you for the feed back, I went with rem. 700 280 it was the RS model they made in the late 80's and it is in excellent shape. I got very lucky when I found it because I was getting ready to start ordering parts for the build.

Good choice, if you want to spruce it up a little get Carlsbad to work the bolt over for you. A new spring, new bushing, a smaller pin and maybe a Sako extractor made a lot of difference for me anyway....add a good trigger and you got it.

I personally hunt with both calipers the 284 and the 280 I like them both it would be a really hard choice for me to determine which one would be the best but I don't think you wouldn't go wrong with either one . But if you do decide to go with the 284 you definitely need to go with a long action. I'm running 180 burgers in my 284 and the muzzle velocity is around 2,800 fps that's with a 26-inch barrel. My 280 has a 24-inch barrel run at 168 burgers and the of muzzle velocity there is around 2950 fps I've killed several whitetails &wild boars & antelope and a couple of elk with both of these guns so like I said in the beginning it would be hard for me to choose which one is better than the other one. But if I was wanting to run a longer vld style bullet I would definitely go with the 284.
