7mm-08 reamed to 284 Win??

I have gotten the bug to take on another project rifle and leaning towards a 284 Winchester. I built a 260 Remington on a Savage 30-06 action and have had great success with loading the cases long to OAL. The 284 Winchester has my interested as it looks like it could be a fairly simple conversion. We, gun dealer and I, compared the 7mm-08 case to a 284 Win case and it appears that it should be a simple reaming job. Are we correct?

I've only done one re-chamber. The first thing I looked for was if the new chamber would completely clean up the old one. The second thing was to see if the pilot of the new chamber reamer would engage the bore in front of the old neck and throat. In my case it finally did both, but the pilot did not reach new bore until a lot of new chamber was already cut. I had opted to use a floating reamer holder and 40 rpm. It came out fine. I believe that if the bore and reamer are both well centered, the reamer will try to find exact center on it's own, until the pilot can reach new bore and finish up the chamber piloted. I don't know if it can finish a concentric chamber without having pilot engagement, at least for the last .200-.300". As I said, I've only done this one time. Re-chambering allowed me to salvage a really fine Hart heavy barrel, and still retain 27+ inches.

Good luck, Tom

How about a 7mmx57mm...can it be reamed to 284win? Looks like one of my potential candidates for a 284win conversion is available in 7x57 and not 7mm-08. Namely, a Ruger #1. Of course, with the base price of a new Ruger #1, it may be more economical to buy a used gun and add a new barrel originally chambered for 284win.

Jakes10mm: You may want to think carefully about building on a Ruger #1. I just had a #1 re-barreled with Shilen 223, 1-9, but am not sure I'd do it again. A lot of highly experienced "smiths I spoke with, flat-out said they did not want to get involved w/ a #1: just too many problems associated with them. The fore-end hanger, the quarter rib, the vertical stringing problems, the extractor cut on the barrel face, etc. E.A.Brown stopped building them 2 yrs. ago: "too many problems". The 'smith who did mine put a lot of time into it, and it shows promise, but he said it would probably be "another 4 yrs before I do another". I'm not expecting bench-rest groups, but will be happy w/ 3 shot moa. Just could not resist having one!:)

The 7x57 case is to long to clean up a with 284 chamber reamer with out setting the barrel back.
The old 7x57 is a pretty good cartridge if you handload for it in a good chamber..
