ducks-and-bucks

I want to build a 7mm rifle for hunting and target use... ive read about them all but alway come back to thinking there is just something I like about the .284 win. Im guessing but I just see it to be so much more accurate over many other 7mm rounds.

Im thinking about doing a trued remington 700 build unless I come across a custom action I can pick up.. or barreled action.... im still in the planning stages with this build though.

What twist rate would I be looking for to shoot 180 gr berger hybrids? I want to stay with a heavier bullets... I know 4381sc or rl 17 is the two top choices in powders... barrel finished at 28 inches? Ill do a long action for sure.. im guessing 1:8 or 1:9 twist...

Any thoughts? Help?

My Shehane target rifle has (2) 1-9" barrels. They shoot well out to 1000. I plan to build a .284 Shehane hunting rifle as soon as the gunsmith gets caught up on other projects. The hunting rifle will also wear a 1-9".

I built my first 284 around a LA 700, using a 28" PacNor 3-groove, 1:9tw bbl, and a variation of Robert Whitley's reamer print (.318" neck instead of his .315"). It's always been a good shooter, especially with S175MKs, which it shoots better than any of the three 284 bbls I've done since. Since the PacNor, I've used Bartlein & Krieger 4-groove hvy Palma blanks, and a Bartlein 5R in SAC's hvy contour for the DTA SRS. All are 1:9tw, and from what I've seen with Berger, JLK, & Sierra 180s, that's plenty of twist to adequately stabilize anything up to & including the Berger 180 Hybrid.

A couple of years after building that 1st 284, I sent its adjustable A5 stock back to McM to have the inlet done for B-O M5 DBM. It feeds straight 284s very reliably out of AI 300WM magazines.

Just recently, I bought a couple of Krieger 7mm,1:9tw hvy Palma blanks with their 5R rifling; did a 280 AI on one, again in a LA 700 & McM A5 stock. It's a shooter - very pleased with the accuracy out of the 280 AI. But even with nearly 6grs more case capacity than the 284, it doesn't appear that I'll be getting significantly more velocity out of it. Another way to look at it though - Winchester only infrequently makes a run of 284 brass, while 280 brass is a little easier to find. And the extra case capacity of the 280 AI should allow me to run velocities at least the equal of what I'm getting out of the 284 without loosening primer pockets prematurely. Only downside as far as I'm concerned is that the 280 AI won't feed through the same AI 300WM mags that I use in the 284. Main use for these rifles is in LR tactical steel matches, where a repeater is the only way to go. Supposedly, Accurate Mag Co. is developing an AI-style mag designed to work with the '06 family of cartridges - if they ever bring these mags to market, my one issue with the 280 AI will be addressed.

Finish at 26", 9 twist, and good to go. Any longer than 26" for hunting is just too clumsy.

My straight .284 set up like this shoots 1-1/2" at 400 all day long. With 4831 SC.

I'm in the middle of building a .284W at the moment. My barrel is a 1:9 but I haven't decided yet whether I want to finish the barrel at 26 or 29 inches.

Must be planning on using a heavy contour also. Assuming long action - I would simply run a 280 for 180s. I'd stop at 25-26" if me. Simpler IMHO, and same capacity basically. I would not ignore a 6.5x55.....

Now you could buy a factory 7 Rem Mag or WSM for hunting, and build something else for punching paper. Could get a round with longer bore life, if that matters.

In the Berger reloading manual there is only 6.8 GRAINS on max loads between a 7SAUM and a 284 with 4831sc and 180 Bergers. I wouldn't think that would be much difference in recoil. Just another case to think about.
