284 Win and 7828SSC - Anybody tried it?

I'm asking in order to try to validate the predictions generated by Quickload. The combo I'm looking at is a 180 grain bullet and IMR7828SSC.

What I need is basic data: Charge, seating depth (OAL preferred), bullet and brass used, and resultant velocity. I don't need a whole bunch of data, a couple of data points and the charge at which pressure signs developed would be great.

Thanks in advance,
Keith

I thought about trying it, had it out, but once I tried H4350, I didnt even bother trying anything else. If you try it, please post data and results, as I am certainly curious.

Since this is a future build, it'll be a while...

I've been shooting F/TR, and I'm getting rather tired of having the hydroplanes "compete" in our rowboat race. I'm planning on moving on up to a hydroplane myself just so I can keep up.

I use the 7828 now thx to TonyR. My rifle has a 30" Krieger 1in 9 twist, and I shoot the 180VLD's at around 2950, with my load. I started around 53.5grs and worked up to what I load now. I loaded one shell at a time with .3 grs from the other to find my max. I use Lapua 6.5x284 brass necked up. I will say it shoots quite well. 7828 gave me the velocity that 4831 would not with out the extra pressure..I use BR-2 primers. As far as seating depth, if I measured it right its 15thou into the lands. One of my buddies shot it at a 600yd match a couple of weeks back and came in 3rd with a 287-8x out of a possible 300.

hope this helps JP

Hmm - never considered trying 7828SSC - the slowest powder I've tried in my 284s is N165. I didn't get any more velocity or accuracy with it than I'd had with H4831, nor did 4831SC do any better, so I've stuck with the old favorite 4831.

Latest 284 is a 28" Bartlein 5R for my DTA SRS - love the versatility of the SRS platform, and mine hammers off the bipod/monopod with H162 AMax, JLK 168VLD, & Berger 180 Hybrids. Loaded the 168s to 2955fps with RL17, and got great accuracy, but would like to stick with a single base powder for the 180s. May have to order a jug of 7828 and see what I've been missing...

Howdy !

" Apples and ...... "

While I have not used 7828 ( or 7828SSC ) in .284, I HAVE wrung it out; in my 6mm wildcat.
Case capacity is a tad < a .243 Win.

Same charge wt of 7828 or 7828SSC gave me outstanding groups, w/ 6mm bullets of
65 -105gr. 7828 gave me high load densities, albiet vel was comparatively low.
However, having less vel than what other powders choices might render, is not a particular problem for my precision shooting needs.

7828SSC charge would settle in case a bit, compared to equal wt charge of 7828 ( in my wildcat )

I also found out that I did not necessarily have to go w/ Magnum primers.

In my circumstance, RL-22 was/is the competing alternate powder; and does very well also
( in my rifle, my loads ).

Not a .284, but a .284 Shehane. Here is a quick OCW test with IMR7828SSC and 175g SMKs.

7828 was about 50fps faster than H4831SC for me with great ES/SD. I use it still in my Shehane.

Thanks, I can work with that... What is the barrel length?

Keith,
The 284 Shehane I shot last weekend, with the old barrel[2400 plus rds through it]. Likes VN165 ES's 2 to 10 and SD's 1 to 4. This load has been shot 10 five shot strings. So this is no fluke.
The next best powder was VN160 then H4831SC. Lower velocity and higher ES and SD. Wasn't able to find any IMR7828SSC to try. Will try it soon have some on order.

Wow! Correct me if I'm wrong, but you were getting right at 3000 fps with a charge of 58.2 grains?

Did you have any room for additional pressure? QL is only as good as the data I feed it, so I'm curious.

Thanks again,
Keith

Keith,
Again this is in my .284 Shehane. 58.5g was my max load with 7828 and the 175g SMKs. Anything above that, I started to get ejector swipe and some primer changes. Yes, 58.2g was getting me 3000fps with my 30" barrel in .284 Shehane.

Excellent!

I'm using 68.25 grains of H2O for the shehane case capacity (64.9 for straight 284). With that, I ran your numbers and yes, QL is close. You are getting just a little more velocity than I expected. On the other hand, I was using a (poor) assumption as to seating depth (COAL) and chnaging the depth does bring the numbers in to nearly exactly what you got.

Thanks for the help!

I like this QL stuff. If I can validate the quality of the predictions, I can pick a cartridge and powder without having to invest money ahead of time. If I then take that data, I might be able to find a load without wearing out the barrel in the process.
