284 shehane

Does anyone have any experience with this cartridge? I plan on a 7mm barrel for my br set-up. I have a Bat action, NF 12-42 nsx scope on a shehane mbr stock. I plan to use this for local 1000yd shooting. The other consideration would be the 7 saum, although I would need a new bolt body. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

Long stroy short, the 284 Shehane will do everything that the SAUM will do with a standard bolt face and Lapua brass. You should get around 2000 rounds + of competitive barrel life (depending on the individual barrel of course).

A good fire form load is 54grains of H4831SC. Basically, the 284 Shehane starts about where the top loads for the straight 284 end. I think you will love the Shehane chambering.

Please note that you will need custom dies.

Jim showed a lot of us the advantages of this cartridge. It is an outstanding 1000 yard F-Class round with the 180 Bergers. I think you will be very pleased. The fireforming is simple. You are just blowing out the body taper a bit so you load the 284 Win brass and shoot it unless you need to turn the necks. I needed 500 cases and I found the fireforming loads to be extremely accurate so I developed a match load and fireformed in matches.

Jim/Tony,

Are you using Lapua brass in the Shehane? And if so....(I assume you had to neck turn the brass) what neck thickness are you using?

Note the image below of a PT&G chamber print. It shows a .313 neck, the same as I use for .284 Win. That usually requires a light turn. There is nothing to prevent using a slightly larger neck that would require no turning. Given the consistency of most Lapua lots, you would not give up much.

I am using the reamer as pictured above with the .313 neck.

Lapua Brass is .014-.015 new. Planned on turning to .013 or .0125 to give .0015 or .002 clearance/side on the loaded round (.003-.004 total).

I like to have .003-.004 total clearance, too. You have to watch too closely at .002. I use the Sinclair NT-4000 and turn to .0125-.013.

My .284 Win reamer is the attached image.

I use Lapua brass necked up in three steps. I size with a 0.309 bushing for a .310 loaded neck with the 180 Bergers. My neck walls are usually 0.0127 on a side because the Bergers are a lttile bigger than 0.284. If you are using a different bullet, you might have to use a different bushing and/or a thinner neck wall. I was surprised to find that the 162 AMax gives almost no neck tension with my setup and the 177 Cauterucio gives a loaded neck over 0.310. It is worth checking the bullet diameter if you make a change. I've had some measure 0.3115 and they still shot fine but it has made me more careful when I change components.

I can assure you your .284 Win reamer is not made to that print since a dimension on that print is not correct (i.e. someone needs to correct a typo). The dimension from bolt face to the junction of the neck and shoulder shows as being longer than the dimension from the bolt face to the end of the neck area - this cannot be!

You are right, Robert. Obviously, the 2.2353 dimension is incorrect. The reamer is sitting on my shelf and was used by Jim Borden's shop to chamber the barrel, so it must conform to most physical laws. ;)

Good catch. The only parameters that I specified to Dave were neck diameter ,throat length and Winchester brass. Other than checking those and the throat diameter, I did not look at much else.

I produced a rough sketch of the reamer so that you could see what it actually looks like.

You are right on the money as usual. And, as you know, the .0127 (to .0125) is almost exactly the point where the neck turning of the expanded up Lapua brass cleans up 100%.
