.284 Shehane Reamer

Hello gentlemen need some suggestions for .284 Shehane Reamer NK and FB, be running only the Berger 184 F-Class, Thanks for your help

Thanks Cody I had settled on a .316 neck but seems like several builders are recommending a much longer over .260 FB with the 184's, your thoughts?

If you don’t mind neck turning, .315 neck and anywhere from .220-.235 freebore
I am with Cody! I neck turn too. The only difference is, I like a .313 neck. I have a friend in Houston who shoots the 184 Berger out of a SAUM IMP. His neck length is just about the same as a Shehane's and he says that a .240 freebore is perfect. Tom also says that a 8.5 twist barrel is necessary. If you have a 9 twist you may want to consider the 180 Hybrids. The freebore could then be anywhere from .220 on up..

I plan to run an 8.5 or 8.7 Twist 5R Bartlein w/EC Tuner, I have talked lately to several of the best builders in the country and they say that several of the US F open team have gone to FB's out to .285 with excellent results, that seemed too much to me but I am far from an expert on the subject and depend on good advice, thanks for you guys help

A .285 freebore is pretty long. That is the freebore normally used for a 195 Hybrid! I believe that I would shorten than up a bit..

Thanks for the advise, I really did not understand the reasoning for the much longer FB, a lot of that out of my knowledge conversation!

That's what I had thought originally Barry and after talking to a few of the masters they were recommending much longer to .285 FB and I didn't understand their explanation of reasoning and honestly did not want to appear Dumb A.. so I didn't ask, heck just getting old I guess!!

Thanks so much everyone for all the excellent advise, Now to get my reamer ordered and proceed with finishing this new build

I use a 284 shehane with a .313 neck and .225 freebore. It shoots the 180 hybrids and the 184’s just fine with a 7 to 15 thousandths jump.

FWIW, my current lot of Lapua 6.5x284 would not have 0.004 clearance in a 0.317 neck chamber... and I would prefer 0.005. This is my first 1K pieces of this cartridge, so I cannot speak to previous norms. I recommend buying a sufficient quantity of the components, actually loading a couple dummy rounds from your lot of bullets, and measuring for yourself.
