284 Shehane - Loads

Richard.
The overall length of my loaded rounds is 3.225 inches and the base to ogive including a Sinclair Caliper comparator is 3.530 inches. The comparator measures 1.109 inches. These rounds jam about 0.010 inches in a 0.276/0.284 barrel. I have another newer barrel where the base to ogive measurement in 3.520 inches again jammed about 0.010. The bullets are Berger Thick 180gr VLDs trimmed and pointed to 1.500 inch overall length. I found that the 3.520 base ogive dimension is necessary to keep the boattail junction out of the donut area of the case neck. My reamer is the same one as the print on the 7mm Cartridge Guide but I have my gunsmith lenghten the throat an extra 0.020 inches to avoid the donut. I did extensive testing of seating depth using Jason Baney's round robin method and found the 0.010 to 0.015 jam to give consistently better vertical and minimize flyers. Off the lands 0.010 might give 2-3 inches of vertical at 300 yards where jammed 0.010 to 0.015 would consistently give under 3/4 inch vertical at 300. These rounds give consistent X-ring vertcial at 1000 yards under F-Class match conditions.

It seems Bergers like the .010-.020 jam. I find the same in my 6BR with the 105's that .018 seems to be the sweet spot.

My 6BR was the same. Jam the VLDs and touch the lands or jump the standard boat tail bullets. I worked up accuracy loads for the 115VLD and 108BT in mine and they ended up using the same setting on the seater die. Both shot very nicely including the 115 out to 1000 yards although I only tested in warm weather. But my Shehane is giving me vertical accuracy comparable to the best I was able to get from the BR so I don't think I am giving anything up except cost for the improvement in winddrift.

I JUST OPENED THE ARTICAL ON THE 7 SHEHANE ,THIS WAS THE FIRST DAY IN MONTHS THAT THE WEATHER WAS GOOD ENOUGH TO SHOOT MY NEW BUILD AND I GOT THE EXACT RESULTS ON RELOADER 17, FORTUNATELY I LOARER ONLY ONE ROUND, ONE NEW LAPUA CASE WENT IN THE TRASH ,BE CAREFULL WITH THIS POWDER

Just stating a fact that a lot of us have found. RL-17 goes from mild to wild with a minamal change in charge weight. It is far to finicy for me and I don't even consider it when trying a new combination, regardless of cartridge.

All I can find right now are 184 and 190 hybrids about what velocity should I be looking for,30" Hart barrel 1&8 twist, 2700 fps I am on the edge of primer and stiff bolt lift ,just starting to brake in barrel ,may get better after brake in

I jsut want to clarify the point I was trying to make..I'm sure that 56 grs worked for Jim Hardy, or he would not have stated so in the aritlce..not trying to doubt his findings...Just wanted everyone to work up slowly, and see what their gun will stand...I can tell you that a Bat M, on a 90 degree day with 56grs is way to hot...I guessing that 54-54.5 grs will be a good load..I'll report back...

Jim
180 Berger hybrid. 54-55.5 grains of 4831 sc will be an excellent place to test. Don’t get caught up on velocities. Make your rifle accurate and happy. You will get better results.

Pressure goes up after break in, in my experience.

Be careful!

Yes, I know this is a zombie thread.
