284 shehane freebore for 180 hybrid

The reamer print on this site shows 225 freebore. I called PT&G and they only had one 284 shehane reamer in stock with a .313 neck and I believe she said it had a 185 freebore. Is that going to be too short for the 180 Berger hybrid?

I use a .313 neck and .220" freebore but I think that .200" is better, .185" is also Ok. My current barrel moved about .015" in 750 rounds. The bullet is still likely to clear a potential doughnut at that freebore and jumped the typical .015".

My reamer has .189 freebore and the boat tail junction clears the donut area with the bullet jumped .020". It is too short for the 180 VLDs though, their bearing surface puts the boat tail junction just into the donut when jammed .015"

I spoke to Dave Kiff today about having my Shehane reamer's freebore reduced. He is recommending .188" for the 180 Hybrid. So, it seems that you are right where you need to be. I am sending Dave my reamer tomorrow for reduction to .188". As you correctly noted, this is optimal for the 180 Hybrid, not the VLD. Since the chance that I will shoot anything but the Hybrid hovers somewhere around zero, this is the correct move. [br]
See you in Raton!

The .188 reamer is what Dave sold me this summer. I actually shoot the 162 amaxs out to 500 yrds and the 180's out farther both work well with the .188. As stated before maybe a lil short when new but with throat erosion it settles in quite nicely.

I just ordered a .313 Neck with .220" Free Bore, would I be better off shooting the 180 VLD or 180 Hybrids?

Thanks!

Shoot the hybrids. But, your freebore should work for either. I've shot both in the same spec chamber.

Just because it says a number on the reamer doesn't make it so. If you have one you like dont change it. I had a PTG .124 I liked so I ordered a .135 just a little longer. It came in .025 shorter than my .124. Why?, Because the .124 actually measured .150 on the optical comparator, and my new .135 was actually closer to .124. The point is, I think you just take your chances with them and if you get one you like, never let it go. Now I have a .160 ordered with Henriksen.

I have both the .188 and .190 I think it's the perfect size. the 180's work great but you can also shoot 162Amax's or 168 bergers and get them working.

Just want to bounce the following off the collective knowledge base here for comment. I am building a out to 500 yard hunting gun in .284 shehane. My barrel is a 19" Proof barrel with a TB9 can on it on 29" total. Given I'll be velocity challenged I decided on .230 freebore running 162 ELD-M's. This lets me seat the bullet out a bit more allowing for case displacement. The neck is .319 allowing for no turn Norma 284 win brass. Thoughts before I approve the reamer drawing for JGS? Thank you in advance.
