284 reamer

Will the standard necked up Lapua brass reamer work for the new Norma brass? My action is still on order at Kelblys and I'm just going to have them chamber a barrel there but they only has the Lapua brass reamer. Will this work for the Norma brass? Also will I need to neck turn and what freebore do I need for the 180 hybrids.

The 'Norma Shiraz" brass has a neck wall thickness of 16 thousandths! That is a lot of brass. I am one that likes a neck wall thickness of 12 thousandths>> this makes seating bullets smooth as butter and very consistent. So in MY case, I use a reamer with a .313 neck.. I also like a "long"ish" freebore for ANY bullet I shoot. My reamer I use in my "straight" .284 is a .313 neck and a .235 freebore... But it WILL necessitate neck turning!

I had planned on neck turning anyways. But the Norma brass will still work after it's been turned in the lapua chamber? I had read where the body wall thickness was thicker than the lapua brass. What is the standard freebore if .235 is long? Is there any disadvantage of a .235 freebore

I do not know what a "Lapua" chamber is. I simply ordered a "straight" 284 reamer from PT&G and it works just fine with the Norma brass.. I forgot: Kiff likes a .188 freebore for the 180 Hybrids. I think that is TOO short. Some barrels like the Hybrids up to 30 thousandths off the lands. That .188 freebore would put the bearing surface of the Hybrid BELOW the neck / shoulder junction with a 30k off the lands seating depth. Stay with a .225 or more for better results..

usually a standard reamer is 318 to 320 , I'm using a 317 and lightly turning the necks to come out with 314 to 315!!!! you should be fine!
