.284 reamer for Berger 184g

I have been shooting the 180 hybrids and switching to the 184g bullet. The plan now is to order a new barrel (round count is up and just planning ahead) and order my own reamer. Since I can seat the bullet to whatever depth I want, how would I select the freebore measurement? What is the standard ogive to base measurement most 184g folks use?

My shehane reamer is .225, but I throated it slightly for the 183 SMK's. I have some 184's but haven't had the time to load them up for testing yet. My guess is you will want something north of .225.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

Make up some dummy rounds with the desired bullet seated where you want it. Send two of those to PTG or Dave Mason with instructions to make a reamer to fit. Or, as a one time deal, get a standard reamer and a throating reamer and throat it to your dummy rounds. The 284 reamer has a very short throat made originally to fit the short OAL necessary for the WInchester model 100/88

I just started shooting a straight .284 and had my reamer freebore spec'ed at .225" in anticipation of shooting the 184gr Bergers. After the first 100rds my bullet pressure ring is just above the neck shoulder junction; I like it a little further away to start. If I had to do it over I would have gone with at least another 0.020" of FB. However, at just under 0.015" off light touch and running at 2805fps it is definitely a shooter.
