280AI vs. 284

While i don't have an AI, i have (2) 280 Rem hunting rifles, and a custom Mauser in straight 284 Win.
Bearing in mind they are all hunting rifles, my max weight is actually 168gr Berger VLD-H.
I prefer the 150gr ABLR.
While not match rifles, i like them both.

Well, I'm a little over halfway, maybe 2/3 on shooting out my second 280AI barrel. I've committed to switching over to a 284 Shehane primarily because Peterson brought out straight 284 brass which measures up very well and from all reports handles pressure a bit better than Lapua as Peterson put a bit more material into the primer pocket and head of the case which is a bit of a weakness of the 284 case.
I've primarily used Norma brass in the 280AI and it has held up fairly well, no major issues. Accuracy wise it has served me well and again no complaints there. I think grain for grain though, the 284 case is more efficient and at least here in Australia, Norma have seriously bumped up their prices - in 2018 I could buy straight 280 brass for $170 per hundred. Today it costs about $275 and has got to the point where I could get better quality brass at a cheaper price, so that was my main driving factor.
I have no doubt Peterson 280 or 280AI brass will be good stuff. Toss a coin as to which will give you better accuracy. 280AI brass will withstand pressure a bit better than the 284 so if your goal is to hot rod the case I'd suggest the 280AI then. If you are interested in preserving your brass and running at moderate pressures, I reckon the 284 might just be a bit easier to tune...just.
I run my 280AI at 2800fps, it's accurate and easy on brass. I've run it at 2900fps but it wasn't as accurate. You should be able to run a 284 Shehane alongside the 280AI if your goal is to find a corresponding accuracy node. If you're going to run a straight 284, maybe consider backing the velocity off a bit to preserve your brass...your call.

Not to be too simple, but they're identical. The 280AI is available in some factory loadings, if that is important.
Don't look past the 160 bullets for these cartridges. They match up pretty well to 1000 yards. Either one should do fine.
This may not help. I have 280AI and 284 on long action and both have 27" Lilja barrels. Both are hunting rifles. 280AI 56gr/R-17 with 160gr AB @ 3046fps. 284 53gr/R-17 with 160gr AB @ 3048fps. I had gunsmith order 2 Lilja barrels same time and he build 284 first then 280AI. I used Nosler 280AI brass and neck up 6.5x284 lapua for 284.
I will say one thing I was surprise and still hunting with same load in 284 and changed powders 280AI. I drew good bull tag here in Co and take both rifles.
I've got wildcat 280AI and just ordered some Peterson 280 brass see how that does.

Peterson is currently making the 280 AI brass. Its in stock at Grafs.
