.284 Reamer Dimensions

I'm setting up the new .284, with 180 Hybreds and Win. brass. I do NOT want to turn necks.

Magazine inside length is 3.380", so I have plenty of room. It's a long action, action.
Win brass outside neck dia (unloaded) is .312". I haven't put together any dummy rounds yet.

What freebore and neck diameter dimensions do you guys recommend for a reamer. I will also try 168 VLD's, but as a secondary bullet.

And, what OAL should be optimal with the 180 Hybred considering neck/shoulder junction relationship?

My reamer was speced as pre Erik C... but for win cases .220 freebore with a .3175 neck (PTG)...but I found some win cases as thick as .0155, so with that I have started turning my necks to .014....also forester FL die factory neck dia is .309,if you are interested...Ps ..I really like this round ~ Danny B

Al,
Load up a dummy round keeping the boat-tail corner just above the neck/shoulder junction. Test fit it in the magazine, and also the action. Then send it off to Dave Kiff at Pacific and it will be perfect. I also send about 4 dummy rounds with the reamer to the smith so he knows what he is working towards and he can correct any feeding issues before the rifle leaves his hands

Danny, that sounds about right. Put together a dummy round, and loaded neck is .314". So .002" room on each side of the neck dictates a .318 neck dia. reamer. And my main question to the guys shooting 180 Hybreds is-is the .220 freebore the number you're shooting for?

Scott-I have all kinds of room in the magazine. I loaded the dummy round with the base of the bullet at the body/shoulder junction. I need to get a VLD seating stem from Redding, tho. No way this one will work.--------------------------Did you kill one?--------------------------------

You guys shooting Win brass(no turn), and 180 Hybreds, Can you tell me the freebore and neck diameter on the reamer you used? Thanks!

Call Dave at PT&G and he can answer all your questions. Great guy to deal with.

Done. He calls it the .284 WIN Match reamer. Ordered it up this morn.

Did you order a throating reamer also or does Dave think the reamer will work with the 180's as it comes?
Scott

Scott,

He said the .188 freebore will be perfect for the 180 Hybreds. It will also work for 168 VLD's.

What OAL are you loading yours to? You gotta seat the 180's in there quite a way to get most of the bullet itself seated in the neck. If you seat it for maximum powder capacity, 1/2 the boattail is in the neck, with very little bearing surface of the bullet there. Kind of a compramise.

Al,
My Shehane is loaded to 3.2620 overall length with the case trimmed to 2.1280" which is a little shorter than spec'ed in the manuals but I don't want to trim again. I have 1.1340" of bullet out of the case which leaves .4000" of bullet in the case, .2000" is boattail and the other.2000" is bullet shank. This gives me plenty of shank for neck tension and leaves the most room for powder possible.

I am running about 2950 fps with 57 grains of H4831SC with no pressure signs but I dropped .5 grains for this weekends Regional due to temp. concerns. I was above 3100 fps with RL-17 for some fireforming but didn't seem to have the best accuracy. I believe standard 284 users are running 2800 fps or so with the 180's, maybe a little higher.

Thanks for the numbers. I'll check my dummy rounds and see how close they are to yours. Of course, everything will probably change after chambering. Interested to see what it looks like with the Match reamer, bullet/case relationship.

Scott-did you use a throating reamer to get the bullet out that far, or does the Shehane reamer allow it?

Also, do you have...or have access to a 7MM throating reamer?

Yukonal, when I was getting with Erik C on my 284 build he suggested that I go with the .220 freebore instead of the .188 that PTG suggested... my coal with 162 amaxs is 3.175 and with the 180 smk its 3.120... I,m glad I did take Eriks suggestion...the reamer print I seen on the 284 shehane has a .225 freebore.. I was also told the give the round .0025 to .003 per side clearance Nat L said the same thing... but Dave K suggested a 3.175 neck dia... with winchester brass, I could not even put a bullet back in the fired case, so now I have to neck turn, which I did not want to do..doing it over again I would ask for a .319 neck dia...my win necks measure from .014-.0155...YMMV..just something to think about... load a dummy rd and see how much boatail is down in the shoulder area into your powder space with a .188 FB and a .220 FB.~Danny PS in my lee hand primer not all cases would fit in the shell holder for a 284, now I use the SH for a 30-30 ( #3) works great..

Al,
I am seating my rounds at the lands now, and they shoot really well. 300 yards tonight, 10 shots into 1.25" outside to outside group, 1'' vertical with no attention paid to wind, off a bipod on the ground. I wasn't even holding as hard as I should have, just wanted to foul the barrel and verify zero after lock-titing base onto receiver.

I bought the Shehane reamer and throater from Eric Cortina when he went to the 7 short mags. You are welcome to use it. I would also plan on at least a slight neck clean-up regardless to get the most consistency out of the round. Depending on the smith you use, i would be willing to rent you the reamer ;D I am not naming names, talk to Adam, he knows who I suggest.

My reamer has the .189" free bore which was good for 168gn VLDs, but too short for the 180VLDs. I found it is perfect for the new hybrids. The boat tail junction is just above the shoulder/neck junction when the bullets are jumped .030". It gives me a bit of room to clean up the throat with a throating reamer at the end of a season.
The .220" length freebore is good if you are after maximum case capacity without using a throating reamer, or if you intend to try the 180 VLDs.

Thank you for that. That's exactly the info I was looking for. Good luck this season!

Hey, lengthy response in PM, in short, Berger VLDs in one 7mm barrel and Hybrids in 4 other 7mm barrels. When the barrel and VLD combo is done, I will stick with the Hybrids from there forward.

The .188 and the Hybrids are a great match.

Al,
Is this a hunting rifle or a match rifle? I am not sure how the hybrids will perform as a hunting bullet. They are good in the wind as this weekend proved with gusts to 40mph at 1000 yards, Ben and Pat did well with them and I wasn't far behind.
