284 Norma brass

I haven't heard much lately. Is it holding up as planned? Would you spec a reamer differently than for Lapua brass?

I have been doing load work up on my new .284Win. With 250 rounds down the bore and 4 firings on 25 pieces and 5 on another 25 pieces the primer pockets are still tight. I have been up as high as 56.2grs of H4831SC and 52.2grs of H4350. Now there was only 1 firing at that load level, but all is well. I am using a Manson reamer with a .313 neck and "supposedly" a .230 freebore. However, I can tell you most assuredly it is NOT .230! It may be .200 but not a thousandths over that. I had to have my 'smith order a 7mm unithroater. But that is another story for another time>>>Get a "normal" .284 reamer with your spec of neck diameter and freebore and have at it>>>you will NOT be disappointed!

Could someone measure some new brass for benefit of those thinking of buying a reamer or wishing to using this brass.
(I currently don't have access to this brass)

I bought 200 pieces to try. I haven't loaded them up yet mainly because the necks are so thick. If I recall correctly, they measured 0.315" as opposed to 0.311 for Lapua and the Winchester I have. My reamer has a 0.318 neck. I want to run 5-tousandths clearance so I'll need to run them down a bit.

I'm using it just as if it were Lapua-necked-up brass...no differently; same reamer, same neck turning settings, etc. What's the concern?

I see NO DIFFERENCE, ergo no concern from my point of view.. I think people are in the midst of creating a problem where none presently exists.. JMHO..

I have been following the threads on the Norma .284 brass The reports on the brass have been good. I have a Shehane that I have no shot yet, I will be using the Norma for it. No neck up, just fire form.

They weight sorted very well over the following range: 195 grain (15%), 196 grain (56%), and 197 grains (28%); nothing fell out of that range.

I plan to devote them exclusively to my .284 Shehane, with the Lapua relegated to the Win .284. Simple strategy for an old guy that has trouble distinguishing from the minute differences of the two cartridges' shoulder angles :-[, to help keep cartridge cases separate in the reloading work-up processes! And, the pockets have held up to 54.50 grains of H4350, although that is not my load.

Com'on fellas...start buying them up :)! Back a few years ago when Norma was a sponsor of Team Berger, we pestered them to "double stamp" the 7mm RSAUM brass for us. They wouldn't/didn't. Now that Shiraz has got them going on DS'ing the .284...maybe they will tackle the RSAUM case next?? 8)

The lack of replies is a function of it being the middle of match season. The guys and gals shooting these things aren't at their computers - they are shooting.

If anyone was disappointed, you would have seen the posts. Silence equals good news.

Well for the lack of responses, I DO hope that sales are brisk. This brass is as good OR better than any on the market. AND if you are just doing a "straight" 284, no necking up / fireforming is needed..

It appears there is little interest in the new 284 Norma brass, judging by the lack of reply.

The first shipment sold out. The big sea shipment should be hitting our warehouse early this coming week, maybe even tomorrow and there are tens of thousands on back-order. Some of our US Team guys have already re-ordered more. This is really good brass - probably the best Norma has made due to the extra steps.

Shiraz...(hint, hint) please take note of my comment above re "double stamping" the 7mm RSAUM brass.

Just curious...when you guys are neck turning this brass, are you just simply running the brass through a 7mm mandrel, then neck turning? In my case, it would be a sinclair 7mm expander mandrel, then using a PMA tool with a sinclair 7mm carbide neck turning mandrel .

That is what I am doing. I use a Sinclair mandrel and a Sinclair neck turning tool. I took my necks down to a neck wall thickness of 12 thousandths..

Well there is movement at the station, good to see the replies.
Basically I spec'd my reamer at .499" on the 200 thou line for Win brass, long before the Norma brass hit the market. This changes the body size up to the shoulder.
Naturally I'd like to know if the Norma special brass will fit my chamber (once cut).
Hence "could someone please measure the brass".

Danny - did not miss it :) Good suggestion!

I will work on it, although I want to push them to finish the Dasher brass. That is such a slooooooow process. They do everything with meticulous detail and every change is discussed to death before it moves forward. So glad the .284 project got done.

We sincerely appreciate what you are doing, Shiraz. Good luck with it, and thanks.

Do you mean shoulder diameter? There is no difference in shoulder angle unless you are running one of those strange Southeast Texas variants. ;)
