.284 max range.

I am wanting to build an ultra long range rifle in .284, but I am not sure if it is up to the task. My ranges will start at 800 yards and go to about 1500 yards.

I considered the WSM's and the RSAUM's, but barrel life, or lack there of, has me concerned.

Has anybody really stretched this round out to see what it is capable of?

Any suggestion for a different cartridge are welcome, but I don't really want a Ultra shoulder slammer magnum or one that eats barrels for lunch.

Thanks
AK

I plugged a Berger 180 grain vld @ 2850fps into my ballistics software and at sea level and 45 F it looks like it will stay supersonic to about 1600 yards, but you would need about 60 MOA elevation depending on your scope height.

To knock a baseball that far it takes a big "bat"....or a Panda...hahahah.......we all want the same thing ....it is tough to beat a 17 lb. 300 mag of some sort,win-WSM-Akley-etc) with a muzzle brake....Roger

I think the ideal cartridge for what you want to do is the 7mm SAUM. It will push the Berger 180gr out at 3000fps and will stay supersonic to around 2000 yards.
Barrel life seems to be good, I currently have over 1200 rounds on my 7mm SAUM light gun and plan on it making another season.
I am shooting the 162 Amax bullets and H1000 powder.
I have not shot mine past 1000 yards yet though.

Supersonic is good, but look for the combination that is the most accurate at the distances you want to shoot. A bullet does not have to be supersonic to be accurate. Many of the extreme distance shooters use the plain old 308W.
