.284 loaded diameter

What is your loaded neck diameter with lapua brass for the .284? I'm thinking about going with a no turn neck for my .284, anyone have in put, good, bad etc?

thanks bus. .317 is what my smith has and I want to make sure that I'm not going to have too much slop

My finished rounds are 0.313" with Lapua. I got my reamer with a 0.318" neck. A 0.317" would have been fine. Be careful cutting the .284 chamber too tight in the neck. I have heard from more than a few shooters that the .284 can get cranky with a tight neck chamber.

I have a .317 neck for a no neck turn 284 Shehane. Every guy I have talked to about the 7mm, specifically the 284 and 284 Shehane has mentioned that these cartridges like clearance on the neck in the order of 0.004-0.007"

I was told the same thing, I'm having a 284 Shehane chambered this week. The gunsmith told me at least .004 clearance.

I'm going to start out with .002 fireform the cases and then go back and turn them with .004 clearance. I turned a few cases frim necking up the 6.5-284 brass and I for some reason can't get a concentric neck so I figurenif I leave some fire form them and go back and take more off to the desired neck dia I'll get better concentric necks. What do you guys think?

You are going to have a hard time getting a concentric neck if you neck turn after fireforming. The best time to do it, if you do it, will be after you expand the necks to 7mm with an expander mandrel that matches the mandrel you will be using to turn the necks.

What is your neck diameter on your reamer and what are you neck turning to?

The neck dia is .313 and I'm turning necks to .3085

What I'm finding on my neck thickness is about .0003-.0004 difference in neck thickness measuring with a tube mic.

I've ordered a new neck case holder and mandrel to see if maybe that helps. I've never had any problems turning my 6 Dasher cases with the case holder I'm using but it does wobble some.
As for mandrels I'm using same brand mandrels from necking up to my neck turner.

If the new case holder for my drill don't help I'm going to just try a different brand neck turner.

i expand 6.5 Lapua brass with a .284 Sinclair expander mandrel. I then full length size with a Redding sizer die (.309") When I seat Berger 180s the finished neck size is .3125". My chamber neck ID is .3175'. I do not turn necks.

Thanks for the info fellas. I don't plan on doing a tight neck this go around. It seems like I should plan on atleast just getting a .309 bushing. Does your guy's .284 seem to have a preference on how tight or loose neck tension? Or just let the gun tell me ;D

most guys are doing 0.004" clearance or more. The 7mm cartridge seems to NOT like a tight neck. Anywhere between 0.004 and 0.007 I think is the sweet spot.

I run a .317 neck with a no neck turn and my loaded round neck diameter is .3125. I run a .311 bushing for a 0.001-0.0015 neck tension.

I do a light skim on the neck after expanding , get a 60 to 80 percent cut/clean up , just enough to get the bumps out and cut into the shoulder a smidge . finish ends up at .3115''. reamer is a .3155''.

I do the same, for the same loaded neck diameter of around 0.3115". My reamer is 0.315". Works great.
