284 Help Needed

I am ready to order the reamer for my 284 Win. and want to send a dummy round to make sure I get the chamber cut I want. My issue is, I cannot find a piece of brass to save my life! If there is anyone out there with one spare piece of 284 brass they could mail to me I would greatly appreciate it. I will be using Winchester brand brass. I am willing to pay shipping of course. If you can help me out, please PM me and we can swap details. Thanks.

Winchester .284 brass is only made seasonally and is hard to find. If you don't already have it, just order a reamer made for Lapua brass with a .317 neck and appropriate freebore (0.188 for Berger 168gr VLDs and 180gr Hybrids, a little longer for the 180gr VLD).

You just have to neck up with an expander die and do a light neck turn to get rid of the donut..

I am out of town until Monday. If your still in need, PM me Monday, I am pretty sure I have Winchester 284 brass. I will have to check.

Falconpilot will send me something to work with. THANK YOU 8) to him and DennisH for offering.

I have some Berger 180 Match Target Hybrids coming tomorrow. My original intent was to set up the rifle to shoot them with the 0.188 freebore as suggested. But as tough as they are to find, I was looking at maybe switching to the 180 Sierras instead. At least you can buy those. Any cautions about that alternative?

Get a 200 freebore, that will work for both bullets.

When ordering a reamer to suit one make of case, if reloading then also consider your die and the resized case dimensions. Major die makers don't sell Lapua or Win dies, just dies to suit the SAAMI spec. Lapua 6.5 x 284 cases are based on a 6.5 x 284 Norma round I believe, not replacements for Win cases.
Refer to my "Post in Reloading" 12 July, Rifle case FL resizing.
I to am selecting a custom reamer shortly.

Agreed, Dennis

The Berger 180's are awesome in my 284. I have tried others, but Berger wins.

Below is actual chrono readings using 4831sc. I could never get the accuracy and speed I wanted with this powder, plus anymore and I showed signs of being hot, flat primers, etc. Most would have settled with this. A friend kept insisting I use RL17 & I am glad I did.

I swaped to RL17, easily hit 2,975fps and my ES & SD were lower than 8. My accuracy is at 2,925fps, so I had to "lower my charge a few tenths. "NO" pressure signs. I can send or post the chrono results as well for this load. I wish I had it now.

The more I read on it the more I see the 200 to 210 being recommended. And if it works for both Bergers and Sierras that's perfect.

Dennis, those 4831 numbers don't look too bad, but the RL17 sounds incredible. Can you post or send me that information?

Thanks LC, I'll look at that thread.

I still don't have brass, but I keep coming up with about 0.270". This is quite a bit more than I have heard of anyone else using. Am I ok or too far out? I was even thinking of adding 10 thousandths so I wasn't at risk of pushing the shank of the 180 Hybrids below the neck/shoulder junction if I need to set them back a ways to get my groups to come together; for a freebore of 0.280".

That's way too much. The 180 Hybrid will seat further out than all others.

I would get a .200" or .220", but no more than that.

Just saw the post, I will find the chrono results and post them.

Also, do you need the 284 brass still?

I have some brass coming, but thanks Dennis. I am still very interested in your RL17 data if you get a chance to post or send it.

Give Ray Bowman a call he can tell you what to get. His 284s have 2 National Championships. He knows the 284.
