284 freebore

rebarreling a 284 win to shoot the 180g hornady eld m, my smith has a suitable reamer with a 220 fb would this be enough to get the best from this bullet bullet .

I do not know about the 7mm ELDM, however, I do know about the 6.5 / 147 ELDM.. The 147 could use about a .300 freebore, thus negating the use of ANY other 6.5 projectile! If the 7mm ELDM is anything like the 6.5, you will need A LOT more freebore than a .220! From the ELDMs I have seen, they have such a L-O-N-G bearing surface that they are basically a telephone pole with a tiny boattail and a point! You better get some good info before you chamber that barrel or you will be using a 180 Berger Hybrid..

My chamber has a .225 fb , the shank on the 180 eld is right at the neck shoulder junction . I don't have donuts so they worked fine . You may want a bit longer FB.

I have read that a .250 freebore is desirable for that bullet. I have no
experience with it myself though.

In my opinion/(lots of testing) the 162 ELD-M’s have grouped better than the 180’s when shooting in our weekly 600 yard match
They will work with 220 freebore and the bearing surface will stay above the donut/junction of shoulder and neck

Would .275” be too much for a reamer to shoot all the heavies? (f Class bullets) I don’t have an issue with the bullet seating half way down the neck.

With a .275-280 freebore, you can shoot the 180 Scenars and the 195 Elite Hunter. For "awhile" you can shoot the Berger 180 Hybrid and the 184 Hybrid>>> Once the throat erodes far enough you will be "stuck" with the 180 Scenars and the 195s. However, the 195s need a straight 8 or at most a 8.25...

thanks for replies, any more input on the eld s would be helpful - living in the uk i was lucky to get real bargain on 1000+ 180 s so hence the question

I would have it chambered for the Berger 180 or 184 Hybrids rather than the Hornady bullets. But that’s just my opinion.

But I understand if you already have a lot of the Hornady bullets.

If you use Norma brass donuts are not a problem. I shot quite a few a while back with less fb than that. They shot great 99.9% of the time. It’s the 0.1% when they disappear that’s the problem.

Don't be frightened of the .275 freebore. I run two 284's on .290 and .300 freebore. Both were done for the Berger 7mm 195's but they didn't work, so I went back to 7mm 180 gr Hybrids.
1000 rounds on and the both rifles (7/270WSM) are still shooting the Hybrids. You might need a little bit more neck tension and you most certainly will need a bit more powder.

I have a .284 Shehane the Gunsmith that chambered it for himself told me it has a 230 freebore, he shot the Berger 180 successfully out to 1000 yards.

Don Dunlap

My reamer has a 0.235 freebore and works great for the Bergers. The ELDM is somewhat longer. I started shooting those at around 1,200 rounds and the throat erosion kept me ahead of the donut. If I were doing it from scratch I would go with 0.250 freeebore if the 180 ELDM was the intended bullet.

Let me try again. Any particular reamer and freebore for the Berger 180 and 184 hybrids?

I had a custom Shehane reamer made last year for the 180-184s...after a lot of reading and a good 30 minute conversation with Dave Kiff at PTG, I went with a .188 freebore - the spec he suggested is in use with a well regarded US F-open shooter who was/is having good results with it.
