284 brass

I am in the process of building my first 284 and I am wondering which brass to shoot. I can size up the 6.5 Lapua brass or do I go with the Winchester brass. Will the throat be to thin on the Lapua. I dont want to make a mistake at this point in the juncture. Planning to shoot 180 bergers. Thanks in advance for your help.

OP,,,it depends on the reamer that cut your chamber,,,the Norma version is aprox .004 bigger at the .200 line ,,,soooo Lapua fits perfect and the Win. has too much clearance ,,,they will work but the primer pockets get loose very quick and with medium loads....there is nothing wrong with the Win brass (which I have ~950 of and will sell)if you have the tight ,winchester dims. reamer,,,,Roger

I purchased 100 pieces of 6.5-284 Lapua brass when I finished my 284 Win build. I now have 700 rounds down the barrel. I expanded the the necks andneck turned them to .013. I size them with a Redding S-type die. I use 4831SC and 180 Bergers. After the next firing, I will finally need to aneal them. I havent lost one piece while firing. Go with the Lapua, you wont be sorry.

I loose the primer pockets after about 2-3 firings on winchester brass. I am just starting to load lapua brass now…much nicer stuff and much easier to obtain.

What size neck do you have?

Same set-up as Brad, other than I turn them to .014 on a .315 next and anneal every third firing. Last 1k match I was at, a fellow shooter was commenting on the excellent vertical the load was holding and he was just a tad amazed when I told him they had 12 firings on them. Starting to prep some new brass as the end is near for this batch. Tula primers are still snug but BR-2's a wee bit loose. If I recall .284 WW brass is a seasonal run. Eric in DL

How much loss do you get on the first firing? I just shot some brand new Lapua that was expanded and annealed and had a couple neck splits after firing... I just wondered if it was a fluke or the norm... But either way you wont go wrong with the Lapua. Matt

Lapua, although the question is largely academic.

You won't likely be able to find any Winchester brass. They only produce it once a year, and I think they skipped last year.

Neck it up with an expander and turn 'em.

Olin-Winchester has not made 284 brass in years and they have more than 400,000 bags back ordered and still not on the schedule. I tried threats and bribes to Vicky (scheduler) and Mike Stotts (sales) at Olin to get it on the schedule but no luck. Don't expect to see any soon.

There is absolutely no reason not to be willing to use both cases?! Although you do have to neck up the Lapua case, there is more than plenty of work that you will need to do on the Winchester case to bring it up to inherent "Lapua quality". Undoubtedly, you will need a good neck turner whichever case you choose!!

You might be better concerned with what reamer neck size to use for your new .284?? I generally neck turn both cases to .310 neck with bullet seated for a .315 reamer neck. But, I am also shooting some Lapuas that are neck turned to .308 with bullet seated. Both present good case life and good accuracy.

Other than a little extra work necking up the Lapua, there is also an economic reason. Because of the superiority of the Lapua brass you get more firings from the brass. In the long run the Lapua is actually much cheaper than the Winchester.
