284 and Berger 180 VLD Freebore

I'm in the process of having my 2nd 284 barrel chambered, but had a question. My reamer is a .189 freebore(Kiff recommanded). The 180 VLD are seated really deep into the case(6.5x284), well past the shoulder/neck junction. I would think that it would be better if the bullets where seated out so that the base didn't go past the junction. I've been wondering if this could be causing my problems of having flyers and etc?

Jim,

There are some fat 7 mm bullets, what is your throat diameter?

My throat diameter is .2842" and found some 180 vlds that measured .2844". It was not possible to locate where the bullets touched the lands. Throated the barrel to .2846" and that fixed my problem. The free bore I use is .175" while a little short it does shoot the 108 vlds quite well.

Yes, I don't know which is worse, the bullet in the shoulder or not seated in relation to the lands properly.

My reamer is the one shown in the 7mm Cartridge guide. I had Mark King add another 0.020 inches to the throat when he did my last two barrels. It keeps the bullet out of the donut with a new chamber.

Thanks Tony. The freebore is .189 I believe, so I'm going to open it ope by about 30 thous or so...
