280AI

My 280AI and 284 are hunting rifles and I got some Berger 180gr VLD hunting bullets that I like to try in both rifles and was wondering if anyone might have some loading data and both rifles have 1/9 twist barrel @ 27" long.

Thanks
Tom

i have experience with 2 280AI, 700 trued, Hart 26" 9 twist bbls

both shot in the .300s with consistancey.

both would work vertually the same with h4350 and h4831 and 140gr Sierra sbt or 140 nosler bt's

160's ran in the high 2800's and shot equally as well.
i did not see a reason for heavier bullets for mulie or elk

r/p brass, 9 1/2 primers and modest presure loads giving 3040fps with either bullet.

Great mulie results out to 380yd no sweat. would easily go further but i like to stalk closer.

Bob, as I mention both rifles are used for hunting and the 280AI with 160AB little over 3000fps makes for a great elk and deer load. I don't mean to be a wise guy but I was looking for information and data for the 180gr bullet.

Tom,
My 284s & 280AIs have either 28"or 30"bbls, and are target/tactical rifles, so have been shot extensively with 180s, including the Berger VLDs. I load mainly H4831 in the 284s, but have tried 4831SC in both 284 & 280 AI.

54.5 of 4831 is about as far as I'll go with WW brass in the 284 with MOLY'd 180s - for bare/uncoated bullets, you'll have to drop charges back and work up. I get around 2715fps out of a couple of 28" bbls with that charge, though my data shows 2791fps out of a 30" Bartlein with the same load, using F210s. I know there are a bunch of guys who post lots more velocity with 180s out of their 284s, but that's as far as I was able to go without loosening primer pockets rather quickly. With the scarcity & cost of 284 brass, I'm not going any hotter. I've got to go with a full grain more of 4831SC to get the same velocity with 180s.

Haven't shot the 280 AI nearly as much as the 284s, but got 2723fps out of a 30" Krieger 5R bbl with moly'd 180 VLDs, F210s, and 56grs of H4831. In this rifle, 4831SC produces nearly as much velocity with 180s as std 4831 with only .2gr more powder.

Tom,,,listen to flatlander,,,,on his .280 load with 180 class bullets (WS-2)(jumping .060'-.080")and 4831 SC,,,,I usually am about .75 gr heavier,,,,buttt,,,the brand/lot of brass and bbl can "vary"....I would go directly to his load and then go up if permitted in your rifle..Roger

in my chambers with the brass i had 61 gr h4831 and 58.6gr of h4350 were virtually equal

Do yall use magnum primers out of this cartridge? I was told they wern't needed. I got my hands on some N560 to try, should be the same burn rate as Rl-22 with out the temp sensativity.
