280AI twist

Hello Members,
Starting a 280AI build, 24” barrel onto a Winchester Model 70.
Plan on using 160 gn. Projectiles, thinking of getting a 1:9” twist barrel.
What are thoughts on my choice?
Any others using this combo and what projectiles are you using, or other weights?

I am doing a 280AI build. I chose a 1-9 twist because I don't plan on shooting really heavy/long projectiles out if it. While I wait for the barrel, I wonder if that was the best choice.

Model 70 magazine length is? Your COAL with which VLD bullet is ?

Often, bullets are more important than headstamps.

If your COAL is short with the Win model 70, then re think your choices to a 284 Winchester, giving yourself more latitude in the Mag Box.

Remove the spacer from the M-70 magazine box, the shorten the bolt stop and shorten/reshape the ejector. That will give you a full 3.6" magazine box.

Get a 1x8 twist, and then run Berger 180s at 2800-2850 with H-1000. I have tuned a few 280 Acks and the Berger 180 with H-1000 almost always works very well.

A 1-9 twist will stabilize a berger 180. I run a 9 twist 284 in f class with 180 and 184 bergers and it works fine.

Hello - thanks for all replies.
I have made up some dummy rounds with Woodleigh and Nosler partion projectiles, and stacked in Mag n they fit good and the CRF bolt picks them up good.
I will stick with the 1:9 barrel. Mite be a 2-3 mth. Wait!

2-3 Months? That would be great if you can find it. Most barrel makers we deal with are 9-15 months out.
