280AI Loads

I just aquired a custom 280AI, the components I have for reloading are as follows:
Winchester large rifle primers
140gr accubonds
Some fire formed 280 remington brass
H4831SC powder
162gr A-Max bullets
I have only shot the gun a couple of times, I would really like to shoot the 162's but am not impressed with the data shown for H4831SC. I don't want to use RE22 powder. I want to stay with a temp stable powder because the weather here in Idaho can go from 65 degree's to below freezing with a foot of snow on the ground. I have tried magpro on other guns with not much luck. Anyone have any ideas, data they would like to share, I am getting down to the wire as for deer season only being a month away. I do know that my 280AI does not like federal 215 primers, I tried some as I have like 4000 left, was sure hoping they would work but they don't so now I need to find someone who need some and make a deal of some sorts. Thanks for any help guys

Chuck, I use h4350 with the 280 AI and 162 A Max and CCI large rifle primers and it shoots very good. I do not live in the extreme cold climate you have, but it does get in the 20's here at times and hot as 100's. I can look at my data for the recipe I use. I would suggest you start lower than what I use for safety's sake.

Chuck ....you should not limit your rifles ability by trying things that you think might work or "wana" hav work...4831 and Rx-22 are proven powders in your cal.....and lots of the hype about temp. sensitivity or un-sensitivity are usually proclaimed by someone who has nevr hunted with gloves on (or off) and the only time they feel the cold is between the house and the car......the 162 A-max is a good un and I wuld use mag primers in cold weather/hunting situations.....make your loads near max cause they do slow down when its cold ,,,no matter what kinda powder ur burnin.....Roger

Temp stable or not , RL-22 is the powder of choice in my 280AI. Shoots the 162 A-max at 2950 out of a 26 in barrel. I have a max load worked up for summer and I find when the temp gets around freezing I'm down 100 fps which is still faster than H4831 will do for me.

i have two that shoot the 140's very well with h4350 and h4831, both give 3140fps out of 26" 9 twist and both shoot in the .300's
R/p brass, 9 1/2 primers start max for 280 and work up

RL-23 might be worth a look. It should give you good velocity and it is much less temp sensitive than RL-22. Just a thought.
