280AI from 30-06 cases question

I just finished a building a 280AI F-class rifle. I have read on this forum where some shooters are necking down 30-06 Lapua brass and fire-forming to 280AI. I tried this and it's easy to do but the brass ends up about 0.045" shorter than Norma 280AI. Have others had the same experience? Will this not lead to a bad case of carbon ring? Your thoughts please.
Dave

In June I also finished my 280 AI for f-class ....Great choice! I read a few comments on the forum that the folks using 30-06 lapua brass had a reamer made to do. They ordered a reamer from P T &G ....you have a regular 280 AI chamber .....so.... you are going to get some carbon in the neck area being the brass being short...you will have to keep ahead of it by a good cleaning...on a regular basis. Go luck ...my 280 AI shoots great! By the way I use Norma 280 brass....no problems at all.

Vince

Thanks, Vince. Have you had any problems with premature primer pocket loosening with the Norma brass? What your favorite load using 180 hybrids?
Dave

Hi Dave ...I have 5 firings on the Norma brass with no premature primer pocket expansion.....I have a 8 twist barrel ... my pet load with the 180 hybrids is
58.0 grains of H1000 ....@ 2850 fps... with the bullet seated .010 off the lands. I've tried H4831SC but the e.s. were higher than I like. My current load is Great out to 1000 yards! During practice Monday I shot two strings of 20 rounds ...197-10x and a 198-9x .

Vince

Sounds like you have a good load, Vince.
In the limited amount of testing I've done 62.0 gr. Of H1000 looks to be a good node for my rifle with the Hybrids just kissing the rifling. My chrono is on the fritz so I don't know the particulars. Today, I shot two 5 shot groups at 200yds that measured under 0.5 ".
Dave

The node for the hybs is at 2920 fps with a 32" barrel h4831sc will out preform H-1000 and I don't see any gain from the last 2 1-8t barrels I had over 1-9ts I have

Single digest es with H4831sc
KEV 77 ....What load of H4831sc are you using? My barrel is 30" I don't believe I can get 2920 fps with H4831SC before I get a sticky bolt lift. When I tested it my es readings we're around 20 fps. If I could use that would be Great I have 8 lbs. Of it.

You guys sound like you're getting good velocities and accuracy out of the 280 AI. I'm considering 280 AI for a new F-Class rifle. Any downside over the straight 284? Nice that brass is available for both. Seems like the 280 AI will give you more flexibility on the loads.
Thanks,
Craig

Hi Craig....I built my 280AI for long range f-class ....it shoots great ...very manageable recoil and you get great velocities with out ant problems . Fireforming brass is very easy ....I rate it A+!

What freebore do you have "smoking brass. I run any where from 59.2- 60.5 grains of 4831sc but it all depends on freebore !! 30" barrel should se node at 2880 - 2890 fps. With the hybrids
