280AI deer bullets

I settled on 162 A-MAX and 140gn TTSX Barnes for my 7X57 loaded to modern power levels, not the "dreaded Spanish Mauser thought!"
I did a lot of research on these two bullets and I primarily hunt western Black tail deer and pigs, the thought was that 162 gn A-MAX was not only very accurate in my rifle, it was a "Known" killer for light skinned game like black tail. Well, last year I shot a black tail buck and a small pig within 30 min! Using 162 gn A-MAX destroyed a lot of meat in both small animals! So, it is 140 TTSX now!
But, I would think the 162 A-MAX would be great for elk. They are a known quantity for accuracy if your load is tuned to them and I know they expand well! The elk is probably large enough to contain the bullet where in black tail and small pig it made a large exit hole.

I've tried them all and I would recommend the Berger hunting vld's. If limited to 300 yds I would say use the 180 grainers for those "not great" angled shots. For farther shots i would go with the 168's for the flatter trajectory. Don't forget to try Ramshot Magpro powder, it will gain major fps over most powders. I got 2800 fps with the 180's out of a 27" Shilen barrel, and easily reached 3100fps with the 168's.

The Barnes TSX's over penetrate in the larger caliber IMO, lose a lot of knockdown power. They work decent in 22-25 caliber at high velocity.

I have been using the 162 grain SST bullets in my 7 SAUM which is a similar power level. They are very accurate and available for a reasonable price. I have killed several good bucks with them and a couple that went over 200 lbs. I take lung/heart shots and none have gone over 40 yds and they do leave a blood trail unless shot head on into the chest and then he did not go far and I heard him fall with all 4 legs tucked under him. I see no reason to change with these results. I am also having the best accuracy with 4831sc powder in a lightweight model 7.

Another vote for the 162 amax accurate and I have had no issues with close range blowups (running at 2900fps) like the ttsx i have seen them anchor animals with very marginal shot placement

A vote for the 150 Nosler BT. They have taken over 300 deer in my camp when used in a 7mmRem.Mag. No failures from 25-350 yds.

The best killing rifle I have ever owned was a 280 Ackley with 180 VLDs. It puts em down instantly!

Wow...nice buck Kev77. Ya'll sure grow 'em big up there!

I've used 139 Hornady SST; 140 & 150 Nosler Ballistic Tip and then I found the 150 gr. Barnes TTSX. Accuracy is outstanding, terminal performance is amazing.
