280 Rem

Sounds like the bedding issue that I have run into a few times, If you have the funds have pillars installed in the stock and the action glassed in. Have someone do it that knows how to keep the action stress free. While that's being done send both scopes back to the factory have them recoiled tested and resealed, Leupold and Burris do it for free via lifetime warranty. If you have or install good scope mounts and lap mounts. I like the dual dovetail Leupold's or Burris scope mounts on hunting rifles. Have barrell crown checked and recrown if possible. If it won't shoot after that sell it or build something else with it.

I just acquired a Ruger M77, tang safety, in .280, and my first trip to the range with it was very disappointing. I used factory Rems. in 140 gr. core lokts. My 2 5 shot groups were > 2.5". I'm used to shooting nickle or dime shot groups with my Weatherby Vanguard 06 handloads, and 3/4 to 1" groups with Rem factory. The crown on the .280 doesn't look so good, and that could be the problem, or maybe it doesn't like the Rem. 140 gr. bullets. Don't know whether to keep it or get rid of it pronto. What to do?

i am of a slightly different experience, i agree on bullets, in mine the 140 Sierra sbr, 140 Nosler bt were the best accurcy, however, the slower powders were cantankerous,

try RL15, 4064 and 4895, at around 46gr a little under max and jump the bullets about .020" do not touch,

give it a try, you may find what you are looking for

thank you to everyone who chimed in on this subject. I recently bumped the scope and had to send it back to Leupold for repair so I haven't been able to try any of your advice yet but will and post when I do.
Thanks again,

Have you tried seating the bullet out further? You might want to try seating the bullets just off the lands or whatever the maximum length would be and still fit in your magazine.

Since it is a very light contour barrel, If it were mine I would put back the pressure point at the fore-end...use layers of electical tape until you get decent results....It is a hunting rifle...that first shot from a cold barrel is the most important.
Have to agree with you about the pressure point LH. I have the same rifle as he does and made the same mistake he did. I removed the pressure point because it would shoot no better than1-1/2" @ 100 yds. with Rem. factory ammo. after free floating the barrel it went to shooting 3-1/2"to 4" @ 100 yds. I fixed this problem permently. It now shoots the Nosler 160 gr. Partition into 3/4" now with a good dose of IMR-4350. Hope he reads this if he hasn't fixed his yet. ..... SEMPER FI!
