Dusty, I feel that the die makers (ALL of them, not just Redding) should simply include both shellholders in their die sets. Easy-peasy way to address the issue.I disagree with that being the best version but i respect your opinion. They changed a 50yr old version .014 and have caused a bunch of guys trouble like this OP. They could have called it anything but an ackley when they changed it from ackley design. They could have called it a 280nosler and it would have been fine with everybody. Now they leave me with 2 reamers labeled the same that are different and dies are a nightmare until it gets decoded in this post by you and a search will reveal this happens everytime a used gun is bought
That would be SOOOOO nice but, right now, I'm finding that the Redding #1+.014 shell holder is as hard to find as the dies I need.Dusty, I feel that the die makers (ALL of them, not just Redding) should simply include both shellholders in their die sets. Easy-peasy way to address the issue.
No different than the spacer that comes in 38 Spl/357 Magnum dies.
The first time I ran into this, facing a standard shellholder .014-.015 did the trick.
Hopefully this will shed some light on the situation. - Al
The Redding shell holder you need is in stock at several online retailers. That would be SOOOOO nice but, right now, I'm finding that the Redding #1+.014 shell holder is as hard to find as the dies I need.
Exactly why I decided just to do the straight 7mm Exp/280 Rem. The two Ackley versions had too many caveats for me to chase an extra 100-125 FPS.I disagree with that being the best version but i respect your opinion. I haven't found one in stock yet. Where can I find one ?The Redding shell holder you need is in stock at several online retailers.
If you send Redding a few fired cases they will see which die fits your chamber.I talked again to Redding yesterday and they don't and won't make them any more because the catalog number for them was transferred to the SAAMI chamber dies now. I will check with Whidden. I was hoping someone had a set they wanted to part with or trade for a new set of Redding SAAMI chamber dies.
Thanks, I already talked with them on a few occasions and they told me which dies I need and told me they do not manufacture them anymore. The catalog number carries over to the SAMMI dies now. The gentleman's suggestion was to either find a used set or find a #1-.014 shell holder in stock somewhere. If you send Redding a few fired cases they will see which die fits your chamber.
I was going by what Redding told me. They said they make a #1+.014 just for the early Ackley chamber issue. This is why I would rather just find a set of the correct dies. Just makes things easier.I think you need a #3 shellholder. Lee is a #2 but they dont make the .014View attachment 1236380
Just looked at redding catalog and it seems they must have changed their shell holder numbers. You were right. If you find one grab me one too.I was going by what Redding told me. The Redding part number for the +.014 shell holder is 11649. -AlJust looked at redding catalog and it seems they must have changed their shell holder numbers. You were right. If you find one grab me one too.
Get you some Rl23 and it will be more like 200FPS easy. The two Ackley versions had too many caveats for me to chase an extra 100-125 FPS.
I have what that your looking for. I don't have seater have Redding FL bushing sizer and bushing neck. The box FL sizer was marked 280 Rem Imp 40 and die is marked 280 Imp 40. I also have Redding body die box is 280 Rem Imp 40 and die is mark same as other 2.I talked again to Redding yesterday and they don't and won't make them any more because the catalog number for them was transferred to the SAAMI chamber dies now. Well, According to Nosler and blown primers as well as a chamber casting, the SAAMI Chamber is .014 shorter allowing to much head space in a traditional chamber. So yes, there is a difference.Do a search on these forums. There was a very long thread arguing about the differences. Dave Kiff showed that there wasn’t really a difference. He said the datum was just measured differently. I don’t recall how many years ago, but approximately 6-8. I think the reason people got confused was in the max to minimum tolerance.
I will !Just looked at redding catalog and it seems they must have changed their shell holder numbers. You were right. If you find one grab me one too.
