280 Rem Imp 40° Dies

Newbie here,
I bought a set of Redding 280 AI dies before I knew there were two different chambers. Now I need a set of 280 Rem Imp 40° dies instead according to Redding and RCBS. Does anyone know where to find a set or have a set they would like to sell ? Thanks

The only two chamberings that I'm up to speed on are the standard Remington 280 and the Ackley Improved version with the 40 degree shoulder. If you have a gun chambered for the .280 AI and a set of dies for the .280 AI, you should be good to go. Who told you that you need something different than what you have?

Hes needing the old original version not the one nosler changed up. Redding will make you the old dies or you can get whidden to make you some.

I talked again to Redding yesterday and they don't and won't make them any more because the catalog number for them was transferred to the SAAMI chamber dies now. I will check with Whidden. I was hoping someone had a set they wanted to part with or trade for a new set of Redding SAAMI chamber dies.

Man thats awful about redding. I still have my old set that i had my 280ack reamer made from. Whidden will definitely make you some dies if you have the reamer print or fired cases. You should be able to use those dies to get some fired cases

I bought a 280 Ackley from a pawn shop that had a smashed trigger guard and a trashed stock. At the time I was only aware of one Ackley chamber. This is the rifle now It is a Mauser 98 VZ24 with a 24" barrel. The scope was replaced with a Leupold Vari X-2 4-12 A.O.20190215_175517.jpg

One of my local shops has a set. Check your PM's for their contact info.

Great cartridge! :) -Al

Direct from Reddings site:

The SAAMI spec cartridge carries the approved name of " 280 Ackley Improved " .
The older wildcat has several names including 280 Ackley Improved 40°, 280 Rem Improved 40°, 280 Imp 40°, 280 Ackley, 280 Rem Imp, and more.
The SAAMI spec 280 Ackley Improved chamber is .014 inches shorter at the datum line headspace dimension than the traditionally accepted wildcat chamber spec as previously produced.
Our current production dies are for chambers that are cut to the SAAMI specification and are stamped "280 Ackley Imp".
Any Redding dies made before 2011 are stamped " 280 Rem Imp 40° " and are built to the originally accepted wildcat specs.
These older dies will not bump the shoulder of cases for a SAAMI chamber.
In other words, the old dies are too deep for the current SAAMI chamber.

NOTICE THIS FROM REDDING:

Redding makes a Competition shellholder that is .014 deeper than the standard #1 shellholder so the owner of a wildcat chamber can use the current SAAMI spec dies for safe resizing.

Failing to use this shellholder or to back the die away from a standard shellholder by a minimum of 0.014" will result in too much shoulder bump which may create an unsafe, excessive headspace condition when fired in a traditionally dimensioned wildcat chamber.

The world of wildcat variations are endless. My hunting rifle (was given to me by the builder) built in 1955 is a 7-06 AI. Got a set of RCBS custom dies that are marked 280 AI, as per cases. So I believed for many years, I had a 280AI, but the was not quite true. Have a 7-06AI 40 degree should. Did a little trading with cousin a few years ago and now have another one, built in the 60's by the same builder. Was surprised to find, I am the also the proud owner of a 7-06AI 30 degree should rifle. Wilson also makes dies from case samples.

Good research there Al thanks alot
Dusty, I went through this with a pal's 280 Ackley.....Ive traveled this road before. ;)
What Nosler and Redding did on SAMMI-ing this case was actually the best move, given all the earlier versions.
Good shootin'. -Al

I disagree with that being the best version but i respect your opinion. They changed a 50yr old version .014 and have caused a bunch of guys trouble like this OP. They could have called it anything but an ackley when they changed it from ackley design. They could have called it a 280nosler and it would have been fine with everybody. Now they leave me with 2 reamers labeled the same that are different and dies are a nightmare until it gets decoded in this post by you and a search will reveal this happens everytime a used gun is bought

I have been informed by gunsmiths, of people buying used custom "280 Ackley's" and then buying the Nosler or Hornady ammo and blowing primers and worse. Nosler and Remington did the 280 ackley a huge dis-service and cause a lot of issues for people buying custom rifles in this awesome caliber. Unless they buy them from the maker, or can be sure they were chambered after 20111, (tho this is not failsafe), they really have no idea which chamber they have. and a lot of sellers don't know either.
